…..and The Ugly.
Now I’m not saying that Gary Doherty is ugly, but these reports have been compiled with the assistance of Spurs Odyssey readers. The view has been put forward that Doherty was treated as a scapegoat throughout the season. If that was the case, why the fond “Ginger Pele” address? There are fans who feel that was pure mickey-taking by the section of the crowd that so christened Gary, who at least did spend most games playing in defence, whilst Mr Pleat disturbingly gave him a couple of substitute runs up front late on.
Doherty has genuinely had some really good games at the back this year, and most people would prefer him to Richards, but the point being made to me is, that Doherty is still a developing player, but too many Spurs fans get on his back too soon. I’m not sure about that myself, but there is a message board here for your views.
That game against Manchester City gets plenty of nominations as being the absolute pits of the season, but for some, there were ongoing factors that upset people even more, such as the disgraceful team spirit at most away games, and the performances of Richards and Doherty at the back.
Despite that late equaliser, many Spurs folk were still upset that Arsenal did secure the title at The Lane, but most of us had gone by the time their celebrations started.
Being in the relegation zone at Christmas time, AND the late season threat was just another bad memory, as was the general treatment of the fans by the club. (Disdain is the word that was offered to me)
The departure of Glenn Hoddle left a real sadness about the place, especially as his last game was in front of gloating Southampton fans. It is amazing to think there really was a chance that he could have gone back to work for “Wupert” later in the season.
I’ve written in full on the Tottenham Trust website about the policing at Wolves. Just be wary of the West Midlands Police next season at Birmingham and West Brom. For some strange reason, I haven’t seen such heavy-handedness at Villa Park.
Finally, as the subject of this page is “Ugly” one has to mention a certain player with the initials “M.K”. I could show you a picture, but you don’t want that, do you? You can though imagine the disgraceful image of him “fronting up” to Van Nistlerooy at Old Trafford, and he did make a speech upsetting to Spurs fans from Islington Town Hall at the end of the season.
Let’s hope that next season can be summarised not by the title of a spaghetti western movie, but by a Lennon-McCartney song – “Getting Better”.
