The week-end fixtures have not been as hard on Spurs as they might have been, but we have still slipped down one place, after Birmingham's exciting 3-3 draw at Ewood Park. Spurs are now just three points off the bottom place, and it is best if we put the past out of our minds, and regard this match at Villa Park as a fresh start to the season. Our bad form has led to a dramatic slide in the table, and we are now being quoted in the relegation stakes, although you can get as much as 20/1 on Spurs to go down, with the three promoted clubs still odds on with the bookies to go straight back to the Championship.
Once again, Spurs are faced with a fixture in which they have had little success since the establishment of the Premiership. Spurs have managed just 1 victory at Villa Park in 12 attempts. When we went there last season (in May this year), we were 16th and they were 6th, which is remarkable similar to our current predicament. Statistics do not augur well for the much needed end to Spurs run of consecutive defeats. Remember what I told you last week, though! Our worst ever run of defeats (in 1994) ended with a match against Villa, although that was a draw at The Lane.
That solitary win was just under 2 years ago, in January, 2003, when a Teddy Sheringham 70th minute shot from 15 yards secured the points. The season before, we only missed out thanks to a needless penalty conceded by Darren Anderton in the last minute, giving Villa a share of the spoils.
Villa have only been beaten twice in the Leage (at Charlton and Arsenal), and the only reason they had a slow start to the season was the number of draws. They have not been beaten at home, and their only embarrassment really was the 3-1 defeat by Burnley at Turf Moor in the Carling Cup.
David O'Leary has not got many selection problems, and it seems that his big choice will be Whittingham or Hitzlsperger in the midfield. Anthony Gardner has been ruled out. Ledley has been ruled in, and Thimothee Atouba returns to the squad, and may displace Reto Ziegler, although personally, I hope the young Swiss International keeps his place. Although Calum Davenport was called back from West Ham, I expect the usual back four to start in this vital game.
My head says that we should hope for nothing better than a draw, but all runs have to come to an end, and if we can retain our newly found goal-scoring prowess, but keep it tight at the back, who's to say it won't happen at Villa Park tomorrow? With odds of 3/1 available for a Spurs win I'd say it's worth a flutter, and I'm predicting 2-1 to Spurs!
