Spurs travel to St. Andrews this week for the first time since the opening day of last season, when Rob Styles awarded a dubious penalty for an alleged infringement by Anthony Gardner against Robbie Savage, who has now moved on to Blackburn and made enemies of his ex-club, as well as the Spurs army! David Dunn scored the penalty on his home debut.
We played the Brummies in August at White Hart Lane this season, when Jermain Defoe scored a wonder goal in the 35th minute. Mendes had started the move, with a good ball to Brown, who brought it down superbly. His ball inside reached Defoe, who was away, leaving two defenders behind him, and beating Taylor with a beautiful right foot shot from 22 yards that curled inside the keeper's left post. This win sealed a 4-match unbeaten opening to the season for Spurs and lifted us to 3rd place.
Birmingham COULD feature three ex-Spurs players this Saturday. Jamie Clapham and Stephen Clemence played in the last match - a 2-0 win that pleased the Blues' fans against Aston Villa - but Darren Anderton last played against West Brom, and then only from the bench. Anderton has made 10 starts in all competitions this season and 11 as sub, scoring three goals in the process. In 12 seasons at Tottenham, Darren played 296 times (excluding substitute appearances), scoring 42 goals in the process. His last goal for Spurs was in our ill-fated 5th Round League Cup game against Middlesbrough in December 2003, when we went out on penalties. Darren did score an early goal at Highbury earlier that year, when we had real hopes of getting something from the game, until the latter stages.
Stephen Clemence's last game for Spurs was at Burnley in the League Cup defeat in November 2002. In his 90 league games for Spurs, Clemence scored just twice, one of which was a back-heel on the line against Derby! I did see him score some great goals for the Reserves though, usually from free kicks.
Jamie Clapham made just one appearance for Spurs' first team. This was not an auspicious occasion. It was the last day of the 96-97 season, with Spurs finishing mid-table (no surprise there then!), playing against Gordon Strachan's Coventry, who needed a last-day victory to stand a chance of survival. Strachan pulled the rabbit out of the hat, winning 2-1, with goals by Dion Dublin and Paul Williams. Paul McVeigh (now at Norwich) scored his only goal for Spurs in the same game. Clapham has made 14 starts for The Blues this term, but spent 6 successful years at Ipswich, before his transfer in 2003.
Birmingham have not drawn a Premiership game for 16 matches. The last occasion was at home to Norwich in November. Spurs have scored just 1 goal and 1 point in five away games this year, and still have managed just 8 league goals away from White Hart Lane this season, despite 5 away victories. Whilst it is time for Spurs to find their away form again, Birmingham have Clinton Morrison in scoring form, back from the Internationals, and Emile Heskey (Club top scorer this season), recalled to the England squad, but fresh, as he did not get the call to actually play for Sven.
Whether Fredi Kanoute will play after his traumatic game for Mali, we do not know, but apparently he is in good shape. Martin Jol will have to assess the fitness of his travelling players, but at the time of writing, Pedro Mendes is the only established first-teamer unable to take part.
It will be a packed house at St. Andrews, with the home side still in no-man's-land in the league. Spurs must assert themselves and take the three points to maintain a closing challenge for Europe. I'll take them to win 2-1.
