Spurs face a Midlands' side for the second time in 4 days, when Steve Bruce's Birmingham come to town on Saturday. As is the case in relation to West Brom, Spurs have not played Birmingham too often over the last 20 years, due to the fact that the Brummies have spent most of that time in lower divisions. Whilst Spurs have lost just 2 of their last 19 home league games against the Blues, one match I prefer not to mention took place on 31st October, 2000, when Birmingham were in fact the only team to beat us at The Lane between April 2000, and February, 2004. It was a League Cup tie, and Birmingham beat us 3-1, when they were a Division One side.

In January this year, Spurs faced Birmingham, when we were desperate for a win. We had lost our previous 4 games, and were in the bottom three in the table. Our confidence had been boosted by a 3-0 home win against Palace in the Cup, but nobody expected such a scintillating show as the one we got on that January night. Stephane Dalmat (who left Spurs as a dressing room villain) was man of the match with two goals, and further goals from Simon Davies and Robbie Keane ensured a 4-1 victory to lift us up the table. This was against a Birmingham side that did include Robbie Savage, who will be absent suspended this week, thanks to a stray elbow against Kezman of Chelsea, and the complaint of Jose Mourinho, who doesn't look like he will be winning many fans outside Stamford Bridge, with his clinical approach to the game.

Savage's absence may give a chance to Stephen Clemence who left us for St. Andrews nearly two years ago. Birmingham have a quite formidable set up these days, and have lost only to Chelsea so far, by a single goal. They will boast the likes of Emile Heskey, Mario Melchiot, and of course Mikael Forssell, allowed a further year on loan from Stamford Bridge. Birmingham have also raided Chelsea for Jesper Gronkjaer, although most Chelsea fans would regard his release as a blessing. Look out though, Gronkjaer CAN deliver sometimes! Might we see our own ex-star, Darren Anderton, who has agreed a one year deal? I wonder. Sod's law dictates that if selected he would find the net against us, which he so rarely did from open play in his latter years at Tottenham.

That first home win of the season is going to be far from easy then. There are suggestions that Jermain Defoe is "fatigued" and may be rested for this match, but then Robbie Keane may be fit enough to start. I cannot see any other tinkering with the team myself, and Michael Carrick may have to make his debut from the bench this week. Mind you, at the moment, I wake up every morning and think "Who will we sign today?", so, with nearly 48 hours to go, there's time yet for Arnesen and Santini (not forgetting Matin Jol of course) to conjure up yet another signing!

You KNOW that Spurs are making progress when this week's rumour about signing Figo was not dismissed out of hand at the outset. You also KNOW that Spurs are moving in the right direction when Gary Doherty is passed on to Norwich, a club at his level, whilst we Spurs fans are starting to truly feel that things really are on the up and up!

Prediction? I'll go for 2-1 to Spurs.
