Spurs DO have a chance on Sunday! They have a chance of achieving their fourth Premiership Double of the season, having beaten Rovers at Ewood Park in December, thanks to a Robbie Keane goal laid on by a fantastic run by Michael Brown, whose drive Spurs have missed in recent weeks, and will be missing again this week. They also have a chance of reaching their highest Premiership position (8th or better) for 9 years.
Most importantly of course, Spurs do have a very slight chance of making the UEFA Cup. Whilst most non-partisan eyes will be on the fight for Premiership survival still involving the four bottom sides, as we all know, the final UEFA place has still to be resolved and it will go to Middlesbrough, Man City or Spurs. Just to remind you, we need City to beat Boro, hopefully by just 1 goal, and we need to beat Blackburn by a margin of 2 goals better, as we have scored 1 more goal than them at this stage. I suppose it could get even more complicated if City were to win 5-4 and we won 3-0, but it's easier to think in terms of a 1-0 win to City and 3-0 to Spurs. Here is the situation going into the game:-
7 M'brough 37 14 12 11 52 45 7 54
8 Man City 37 13 12 12 46 38 8 51
9 Spurs 37 14 9 14 47 41 6 51
Of course, if Boro win or draw, they qualify. We could lose or draw and fail in that way. It's best to approach this game as an end of season celebration of definite progress by Spurs, who are assured of a top half finish, at the end of a season which has seen great improvement in the Club's Football Infrastructure, with two good Cup runs, and three five goal thrashings by Spurs at White Hart Lane. (Southampton, Everton and Villa)
This is the third year running that we have met Blackburn in our last home game. Two years ago, we suffered an embarrassing defeat by 4-0, as Blackburn qualified for Europe for the second year running at our expense, having beaten us in the 2002 Worthington Cup Final. At the end of that season, Spurs were being tipped for relegation in the 2003-4 season. We did flirt with the drop very briefly, but now there are some who venture to suggest that we may do what Everton have done this year. (No I don't mean lose 7-0 down the road!)
Blackburn have spent much of this season involved in the relegation fight, but the turning point probably came for them, when they beat Southampton 3-0 in April, and for a few weeks, Mark Hughes' side has been safe, although they have won few fans with their style of football. I noticed there were thousands of empty seats at Ewood Park for last week's 3-1 defeat to Fulham, and I doubt that Rovers will have much of a following this Sunday. Craig Short will be suspended after his red card, but our old enemy Robbie Savage will be present to test the midfield.
We need the sort of show we got against Villa then, but I suspect that Blackburn will put up a stubborn fight. My heart says we will win 6-1, but the best my realistic head can come up with is an agonising 3-1, which would still leave us out of the UEFA situation, whatever the City-Boro result.
COME ON CITY! COME ON YOU SPURS!!!
