The first thing I want to do is take another opportunity to thank the Bolton fans who travelled to White Hart lane for the home fixture on 23rd October, which was the day we received the devastating news of the passing of Bill Nicholson. Home and Away fans were moved incredibly by the video montage which was played before kick-off in tribute to the great man, and to a man, woman and child, all in the stadium spontaneously applauded the memory of a true football legend.
Sadly the result did not meet our expectations, but within days we were at The Reebock Stadium for a quite dramatic Carling Cup Third Round tie, won by Spurs in extra time - 4-3. Our Cup record against The "Trotters" has been good in recent years, as we have won the last three such meetings, but incredibly, we have now lost four successive Premiership games against Sam Allardyce's men. This is a record that MUST be amended tomorrow night, as the two teams effectively battle it out for eighth place, before hopefully going on to challenge for a European place. The teams just behind us - Man City and Aston Villa - will be waiting to swoop upon the loser of this game, but they play Newcastle and Fulham respectively on Wednesday, who also have an eye on the top half.
Bolton fielded an "FA Cup side" at Boundary park on Sunday, where they beat an ardent Oldham side 1-0. It is possible that just five of the team that played then will feature in this game. Certainly right back Nicky Hunt will be absent with his long term ankle injury sustained in a nasty tackle seen by the TV audience. "Gobber" Diouf (or should that be "Robber"?) played out the closing minutes as a substitute and is sure to play against us, when he will be a great danger by fair means or foul, like it or not. Bolton endured their own 6 match run of defeats at the end of 2004, and Diouf missed three of those games.
Bolton have now won their last three Premiership games, including a home win against Arsenal with a goal from another danger Stelios Giannakopoulos. Let there be no doubt - this is another tough match for Spurs, who have failed to excite their own fans since a great 5-2 win against Everton on New Year's Day.
New signings Mido and Cerny travel with the squad, and Cerny will be the more experienced back-up for Paul Robinson. We may well see Mido on the bench. Both Mendes and Naybet, who missed Saturday's Cup game, are slightly doubtful, but of the two, Naybet looks more likely to play.
Please note the Spurs Odyssey Match Report will not be available till Wednesday evening.
