Spurs' home fans have been starved of football for nearly a month, and in the four home games to date, they have been starved of goals too! Spurs have won just 1, drawn 2 and lost 1 of those games, scoring in the first two matches against Liverpool and Birmingham. That last home league goal came from Jermain Defoe on 28th August! He hasn't scored since, and Spurs only league goal has been at Goodison Park from a defender, Noe Pamarot. Spurs' travelling support does still have the consolation of the 6 we scored at Oldham in the Carling Cup, and we travel to the Reebock Stadium next week in the next round of that tournament.
There was a time when most Premiership sides would regard Bolton as fodder, and to be honest, you have to go back to the Fifties to find a period when Bolton were consistently formidable opposition for Spurs, who lost 5 consecutive away league games between 1956 and 1960. Things have changed now, thanks to Sam Allardyce who has skilfully assembled a blend of experience and determination, with not a little skill included! The "Trotters" have won their last 3 league games against Spurs, winning at White Hart Lane last November for the first time since November 1959.
Bolton will badly miss Ivan Campo, who suffered a horrific facial injury last week, in a clash of heads with his team-mate Gary Speed. Campo has been a great boon to the visitors, as he tends to command the area in front of the back four. It will be interesting to see if Bolton maintain their 4-1-4-1 formation. Jay Jay Okocha is also doubtful, and dominated last year's game at The Lane.
Spurs have their own problems, with Edman not ready to return from concussion, and sorely missed. Atouba will also be absent, and the man opposing fans love to hate, Mauricio Taricco, still has this match to serve out a three match ban imposed after an incident against Chelsea last season. Therefore, it looks likely that Anthony Gardner will play at left back again, with John Jackson and Reto Ziegler perhaps fighting for the vacancy at left midfield. Skipper Jamie Redknapp will be eligible to return, and Sean Davis may yet make the squad.
I do feel that Jacques Santini needs to unleash the full backs more, and that we need Kanoute to start beside Defoe to give balance to the attack. That may give Robbie Keane the left side slot. At least Spurs do have decent options, despite the absentees.
I have to go for a home win, but it will be a very keenly contested game, and I'll go for a 2-0 scoreline. A win would lift Spurs above Bolton, who start from a superior position for the second consecutive game.
