When Spurs last played Everton at Goodison Park on Good Friday this year, they lost against this opposition for only the second time in the history of the Premiership. It was a dismal performance by Spurs, and Everton's last win of last season. The Toffees went above us on goal difference, but only managed two draws from their remaining 6 games, to escape relegation later than Spurs, who finished 6 points above the Blues.
On the basis of that end of season form, a lack of summer signings, except significantly Tim Cahill from Millwall, and the late sale of Man Utd hat-trick hero Wayne Rooney, many people (including me!) had Everton down as a relegation pick. David Moyes' boys have reverted to their form of two seasons ago, and had a terrific start to the season, being undefeated since a Day One 4-1 tonking by Arsenal.
Since that defeat, Everton have conceded just two goals, which puts them on a par with Spurs defensively over those last 6 games. Those that say that Everton haven't played anyone yet had best look at their creditable 0-0 at Old Trafford, and a home win against fancied Middlesbrough.
Goals have been hard to come by for the hosts, except against relegation battlers Crystal Palace and West Brom. Cahill and Marcus Bent have two goals apiece, as do Leon Osman and Thomas Gravesen, continuing to have great influence from the midfield.
Spurs have another tough battle on their hands then, and this match will be a turning point for us. A win would probably take us back up the table, in amongst the big boys, whereas defeat, would leave us stewing in the bottom half for over two weeks before facing Portsmouth at Fratton Park on October 18th.
It's very good news that both Sean Davis and Thimothee Atouba will travel, and hopefully both will make the starting line-up. Davis is just the sort of player who can pierce the Everton midfield and thread low balls for Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe to build upon. Fredi Kanoute has not recovered, so it looks like pace and guile, rather than height will be the challenge for the Everton defence.
Spurs are due a Premiership goal, having drawn blanks in their last three games. Jamie Redknapp said this:- "Everton will be a hard game on Saturday, it's another tough one at Portsmouth two weeks on Monday then we've Bolton at home.
"If this is a different Tottenham, these are games where we have go and do well rather than do well in some games and not in others. We've got to keep our form going."
In what I believe will be our 3,500th League Fixture, I'll take Spurs to win by the odd goal, scored I hope by Jermain Defoe.
