It's three years since Spurs last played a home game on New Year's Day. That was a 1-0 win against Blackburn, with a goal from Dean Richards in a subdued game, and atmosphere. Spurs do have quite a good record in recent years in their home New Year's fixtures. Last year we beat Crystal Palace 3-0 in the FA Cup on 3rd January. In 2001, (on January 2nd)we beat Newcastle 4-2 in an action-packed game. Spurs were already 3-1 up inside 35 minutes, after Solano had given the visitors the lead. Gary Doherty, Darren Anderton (penalty), and Sergei Rebrov scored the first half goals, but there were three players sent off in that game. Neil Sullivan went for a professional foul on Dyer, who scored the penalty, but Dyer and Solano also got sent off for the Toon! Les Ferdinand finally sealed a two-goal win.(Check out the Spurs Odyssey Archives to find full Match Reports on featured games)
Around this time in other recent years we have also beaten Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal at home!
Now we entertain Everton, against whom we have a fantastic Premiership record, adding to that with a somewhat fortuitous win in October. Noe Pamarot scored with a header, and this was the game where Jamie Redknapp got booked but later suspended for an additional two games by the FA for that challenge on Tim Cahill. Cahill might be relieved to know that Jamie is unlikely to start this game, as he currently seems to have a seat on the bench in his name.
Everton have surprised everyone this season, and I'll admit to having predicted relegation for them after their close shave last term. They have already reached their pre-season target of 40 points, and can count themselves secure in the elite league, where they have spent more time than any other club, being co-founders of the original Football League. Everton's last promotion was in 1954.
David Moyes' boys will want to get back on track after their defeat at Charlton on Tuesday, but their four Premiership defeats have all been against London sides, at home to Arsenal and Spurs, and away to Chelsea as well as Charlton.
I understand that Duncan Ferguson and his elbow will be missing from this game, but I don't think his suspension will have come into play. A bigger concern for The Toffees will be the enforced absence of first choice keeper, Nigel Martyn, who has been on top form all season, having to be replaced with a calf injury on Tuesday. Richard Wright, once considered an England prospect, then rejected by our neighbours, will not fill his defence with the same degree of confidence, and Spurs must aim to give him early pressure. Everton's Steve Watson and Leon Osman are also doubts for this game. Apart from Gravesen's continuing form in the middle, a major reason for Everton's resurgence this season must be the signings of Tim Cahill and Marcus Bent. Cahill is the top scorer, and Bent has just two to his name, but Everton have scored plenty via their midfielders too.
Thimothee Atouba may be available for Martin Jol, and I would expect Nourredine Naybet to return in place of Gardner. Jol's midfield selection will be interesting. Michael Brown must surely start, but Michael Carrick may be too lightweight up against Gravesen and Carsley. Spurs don't have a lot of choice in this department, as Mendes is a similar player. Am I making a case for Redknapp to start after all?
Despite Everton's desire for a return to winning ways, Spurs must win this game, before travelling to Old Trafford and then facing Chelsea at home on January 15th. This could be another tight one, and I'll predict 2-1 to Spurs.
Finally I wish all readers a very Happy New Year!
