With thanks to Declan Mulcahy for his research on the history of FA Cup ties between these two teams
Tottenham Hotspur and West Bromwich Albion have previously met eight
times in the FA Cup. Spurs have won five times with West Bromwich
winning the other three. The tie has proved a good omen for both
teams. West Bromwich have gone on to win the Cup twice out of the
three times they beat Spurs. In the five seasons Spurs won they have
won the cup twice and reached the semi-final on another occasion.
The first meeting was in 1901 when Spurs were still a non league team
in the Southern League while Albion were in the first division. As it
was a semi-final it was played at a neutral venue. However it was
virtually a home game for West Brom as it was played at nearby Villa
Park. Despite the venue and the fact that Spurs were still a non
league team they crushed Albion 4-0 with Sandy Brown scoring all four
goals. Spurs went on to win the cup and are the only non league team
to win it since the league championship was established in 1888-1889.
Sandy Brown scored an incredible 15 goals during that season's cup
campaign.
Two seasons later in 1903 the teams met again in the first round (the
equivalent of the third round today). On paper West Brom should have
been favourites since they were a Division 1 team while Spurs were
still a non league team. The first game at White Hart Lane was a 0-0
draw. Spurs prevailed 2-0 in the replay at the Hawthorns with William
Dryburgh scoring from a penalty and the second from Vivian Woodward a
well known English international player at the time. Spurs were
eliminated two rounds later by Aston Villa.
The third meeting was in 1912. Both teams were now in Division 1.
Albion won 3-0 in a first round game at the Hawthorns
A further nineteen years and a world war elapsed before the next
meeting in 1931. Both teams had now dropped to the second division.
West Brom won 1-0 in a fourth round tie at the Hawthorns. They went
on to become one of the few second division teams to win the cup.
There was a gap of seventeen years and another world war before the
fifth meeting in 1948. Both teams were again in division 2. It was a
fourth round game played at White Hart Lane. Spurs won 3-1 with
Freddie Cox scoring once and the Channel Island's centre forward Len
Duquemin bagging two goals. The next season Cox, a winger, joined the
unmentionables down the road and won both a league and cup medal with
them during his career there. Returning to the 1948 season Spurs
progressed to the semi-final where they lost to Blackpool.
In 1954, both teams having returned to Division 1 met in a sixth round
game at the Hawthorns. Albion won 3-0. West Brom went on to win the
cup beating Preston in the final.
The seventh meeting took place in 1962. Both teams were still in
Division 1 and Spurs were the reigning league champions and cup
holders have won the double the previous season. They had signed
Jimmy Greaves two months earlier for 99,999 pounds from Milan. The
game was a fifth round tie at the Hawthorns. Spurs won 4-2 with Bobby
Smith and Greaves each scoring twice. Spurs went on to win the cup
for the second season running beating Burnley in the final.
The eight and final meeting took place in 1983. It was a fourth round
game played on January 29 at White Hart Lane. Coincidently this
year's fourth round game will also be played on January 29 although
this time it is at the Hawthorns. The game was notable for a couple
of things. Spurs had won the cup for the two previous seasons and had
thus won their previous thirteen consecutive cup games. In addition
the current managerial team were in opposition with Chris Hughton
representing Spurs and Martin Jol lining up for Albion. Spurs won 2-1
with goals from Terry Gibson and Garth Crooks. They established a
club record in winning their fourteenth consecutive FA Cup game.
Unfortunately they lost 2-0 to Everton at Goodison Park in the next
round.
Overall thus Spurs have a good FA Cup record against West Brom both
home and away, In addition beating Albion has often been an omen for
a successful cup run.
West Brom's last Major Trophy success was winning the 1968 FA Cup against Leeds with a stunning goal by the late Jeff Astle that featured on ITV "Big Match" credits for many years afterwards. Jeff used to feature at the end of Skinner & Baddiel's Fantasy Football programmes to stun us with his singing! Astle is as big a legend at The Hawthorns as any player at any club in the land.
Since losing 5-0 at home on Boxing Day to Liverpool, Bryan Robson has finally managed a couple of wins, and only one defeat in those five games, which include their Third Round success over Preston North End. Kevin Campbell has been a major influence in The Baggies' new-found form, and Spurs will have to be at their best to pass this obstacle at the first time of asking.
It's too early for team news, but Fredi kanoute may make the bench, whilst Simon Davies probably needs another game or two for match fitness. Whether our two new signings - Mido and El Hamdaoui are a) registered in time and b) considered suitable for selection at this stage is anybody's guess. I'll stick my neck out and predict a Spurs win - 3-1.
· Did you know? No Spurs player has scored more goals against one club than Bobby
Smith’s 17 against West Brom.
