It falls to Spurs and Liverpool to kick off the 2004-5 Premiership season, with their early kick-off at 12.45 this Saturday. Liverpool, of course, have already made a bright start to their season with their first leg Champions League qualifier victory, whereas Spurs fans, in their legions have waited eagerly for some full scale action, which we will surely see this week!
This must be the highest profile opener that Spurs have had since losing 2-0 at home to Manchester United in August 1997 (Copy of the report available to anyone interested). In that season of course, we waved goodbye to Gerry Francis, and said hello to Christian Gross. Seven years later, Gross may well yet leave his mark at The lane, as one of the acquisitions of the Arnesen-Santini combo is Thimothee Atouba, who has impressed at Gross's Swiss Basel side. It remains to be seen whether or not Atouba will make a start this Saturday, but his debut will not be far away, I'm sure.
Both teams have made changes since they last met at The Lane in January this year. The more radical differences will be to the Spurs side, who have just lost Carr, who Captained the aside that day. Neither of the Spurs scorers from that game will be present. Robbie Keane is injured for a good two weeks yet, and Helder Postiga (who scored his ONLY Premiership goal against Liverpool) has left for home.
There is no need for me to re-iterate here the top transfer stories of this week that involved both clubs, and the ongoing rumours about Michael Owen. Rafael Benitez will no doubt ring more changes in due course, but in Spurs' case, change has come quickly, and I'm sure it will take the side a while to bed down.
Look out then for Liverpool's new £14.5 million striker Djibril Cisse, and of course we will probably have to watch out for Euro 2004 goal winner Milan Baros. Spurs most recent signing, centre-back Naybet, may not have his work-permit in time, so the defence of King and Gardner may succumb to the pressure of such top class strikers.
It should be an all-action attacking game, with little in the way of defence in Spurs midfield, so I expect goals, and cannot predict a Spurs victory. I'm still being optimistic saying it will be a 2-2 draw!
Possible Spurs line-up:- Robinson; Marney, King, Gardner, Edman; Davis, Redknapp, Mendes, Jackson/Atouba; Kanoute, Defoe - but there all sorts of options, despite injuries to Davies, Keane, and Taricco.
