Spurs travel to The City of Manchester Stadium with a somewhat depleted squad. Jermain Defoe is suspended for this match, ultimately due to his shirt-removal celebration of his goal against Middlesbrough two weeks ago. It is disturbing to hear rumours that Robbie Keane may not travel, due to a knee injury, presumably picked up in training. Thimothee Atouba has his disciplinary hearing this Friday, and if that goes against him, maybe he will miss out too. Spurs already have losses on the left, with Edman not yet fully fit, and Reto Ziegler out for three weeks with a hamstring injury.
Don't panic though, because Stephen Kelly acquitted himself very well at right back last week, and could do just the same on the left, as he did in the Carling Cup tie at Burnley. Anthony Gardner and Noe Pamarot are also available, I believe, so there should be no trouble in defence. Maybe we'll see a five-man midfield behind Fredi Kanoute, featuring Brown, Mendes, Redknapp, Carrick, and one of the Reserves such as Mark Yeates, John Jackson, or even Spase Dilevski, who is a useful wing player. Personally, I think that Silva is too similar in style to Kanoute, and should start on the bench.
City have their own injury problems too, and currently top the Premiership Injury List with 8 players out. These include long term absentees such as Sun Jihai (out for the season), ex-Spur Ben Thatcher (February), and Trevor Sinclair, also unlikely to feature before the end of the season.Steve Mcmanaman is out for at least another week, and Anelka and Reyna will be doubtful for this game. Thus we can expect to be facing Robbie Fowler and Jon Macken, who scored that devastating goal in February to secure a historic 4-3 win in the FA Cup. Spurs fans want to cast this match into the archives, but the home crowd will no doubt do a bit of crowing over that. Shaun Wright-Phillips will be a major danger, of course, and Ziegler may well be missed for his pace and ability to assist the left back.
Spurs and City played each other 5 times last season, drawing both the League games, and with Spurs winning their League Cup game at White Hart Lane. Helder Postiga scored his first of only two senior goals for Spurs in that fixture. Last year's away league game was a 0-0, where Spurs were very lucky to hold out for a point. The home game in April was played with Spurs only one place, but 4 points ahead of City who were much closer to the relegation fight than us. Now we face each other in mid-table, and both continue to be under-achievers in the Premiership. In the circumstances, I rather fancy Spurs to keep men behind the ball, and settle for another draw.
Did you know? When Spurs played Manchester City at White Hart lane in October 1960, Spurs dropped their first point of the campaign, after that historic 11-match winning start. Spurs went one up through Bobby Smith, and when Colbridge equalised in the 50th minute, Spurs players claimed he handled the ball, but the goal stood, and that winning run ended. The City side that day included a 20-year old Denis Law, who scored 21 goals that season, before his brief sojourn in Italy and a return to the other side of Manchester. City's goalkeeper was the legendary German Bert Trautmann, See this page who famously played out the 1956 Cup Final with a fracture to his neck. Trautmann is now 81 and recently visited Eastlands, and I understand has been awarded an OBE.
