This is not the first time in recent history that we have faced Manchester United in September and been above them in the League! Almost two years ago to the day (September 21st 2002), Spurs faced United (at Old Trafford)and were 8 places and 5 points above them. United won that game 1-0, and Spurs good start was at an end, especially as they lost at home to Middlesbrough 3-0 the following week. We must hope that history does not repeat itself, and if Spurs can remain unbeaten this Saturday, then I will start to believe that we really can achieve more than just improvement this term.
However, United, despite their poor start are only one point behind us, and will be highly motivated to kick into gear and try to get back into the Premiership race. It's bad luck for Spurs that Van Nistelrooy is fully fit, and that Rio Ferdinand is available and has warmed up, after playing in United's 2-1 win against Liverpool on Monday night.
It's going to be interesting to see whether or not Spurs come out of their shell and try to take on the visitors, rather than defend for a draw. It's also going to be difficult for Spurs to create opportunities against a team that does still have loads and loads of talent after all! Still, the defence has more than proved its ability to resist pressure, and in Mendes and Defoe, amongst others, we have genuine class to compete with the best.
Atouba will be a major injury doubt for Spurs, who I fear will continue to miss Sean Davis and Michael Carrick, and therefore the sort of flair required to break down even this Man Utd side. Even with my head in charge, I can't predict better than a draw, and I'll go for 1-1.
