The Newcastle programme habitually says that Spurs have the best away record at St. James' Park of any current Premiership team. Yet Spurs have won just two league games in the last 15 visits. I was at the last of these wins in October 2001 (Report here), when Darren Anderton and Gus Poyet ensured the home crowd were quiet, and left in their droves in a state of some misery.
The only other Premiership win was on the first day of the 93-94 season, thanks to a goal by Teddy Sheringham! Spurs away dominance, leading to that record, came between the 1930s and the 1984-5 season.
Statistics count for little, especially at this stage of the season, but there is plenty to keep us interested on our journey up to Tyneside for our third August visit in 11 years. After all, Spurs will make an early re-acquaintance with Stephen Carr, who made his debut last week at Middlesbrough for his new team. Whilst Carr might be able to pass on a lot of information about his old team, the rate of change at The Lane has been so rapid in the last 10 days, that even his information will be out of date! After all, he will not even have met Thimothee Atouba, who might be his opponent this Saturday. Atouba looked big and powerful in his cameo last week, and may not bother Carr too much for pace, but hopefully he will peg him in his own half for most of the game.
Gary Doherty is no longer around, having signed for Norwich (not 100% confirmed at the time of writing), but he was well down the pecking order anyway, with Naybet and King likely to carry on where they left off competently against Liverpool's strike force last week. Naybet has the craft, experience and expertise to handle Shearer (if selected!), whilst Ledley can keep up with Bellamy. I don't suppose we'll see Dyer on the right wing, as he still has to clear the air with the manager and the fans, or perhaps move on. How long will Patrick Kluivert be happy to be on the bench?
Make no mistake, this is going to be another toughie for Spurs, and a point is the best I think we can hope for. The "Toon" were unlucky to be deprived of the full three points last week by Jimmy Floyd ("The ref gave it so it was a goal") Hasselbaink at The Riverside. Most of the 52,000 fans will be baying for an opening home victory too. Spurs' side is unlikely to be much different from last Saturday, and with the exception of Jamie Redknapp (who surely will have to make way if we do sign Carrick), we do at last have the pace in our side to match most teams in the Premiership.
I'll predict a 2-2 draw, and I would back Defoe to score at some stage for Spurs. Going back to statistics, I note that Newcastle have drawn their last 4 Premiership games, and that their last 3 such games have been away from home. I fear the statistics could weigh against Spurs this week!
