Amongst certain other talking points surrounding this game, we are likely to see the first return of Stephen Carr to The Lane since his departure at the beginning of this season. Stephen Carr made a total of 257 appearances for Spurs, plus 5 as substitute, scoring a total of 7 goals in the process. Carr's most memorable goals were in the 99-2000 season, which included that amazing cracker at home against Manchester United, and a stylish goal from distance in the last game of that season against Sunderland. Carr's last goal for Spurs was in a disastrous game at Goodison Park on Good Friday last year, when he scored a 75th minute consolation goal, and then got sent off for a second bookable offence. Carr's final competitive appearance for Spurs was the following week against Manchester City, but he went off injured after half an hour.
Carr did play in Spurs pre-season programme before signing for Newcastle, then managed by Sir Bobby Robson. He played against us at St James Park in August, and in the recent Cup game, getting booed by some of the visiting support on both occasions. His reception this week will be of interest. Carr was once a great favourite, but never reached the heights of form he had demonstrated after a long absence through injury. He also seemed to have the sulks in his last two years at the club, and it was no surprise when he left.
Carr has played 29 games for the Geordies this season, scoring once. He certainly looks a lot happier, but must have mixed feelings about his new club's League position (below Spurs), although he has of course enjoyed some European football this season.
Newcastle took a valuable 1-0 lead in their UEFA Cup quarter final tie at home against Sporting Lisbon on Thursday, and it was that man Shearer who scored the goal. Shearer continues to chase Jackie Milburn's scoring record for The Toon, and is sure to play on Sunday. Once he achieves that record, as he surely will, the deification of Shearer on Tyneside will be complete, although he still has no silverware to show for his time in black and white.
Patrick Kluivert has a leg injury with no return date, and Titus Bramble and Babayaro will also be absent through injury. These enforced absences make the suspensions of Bowyer, Dyer and Taylor all the more difficult for Newcastle to bear,as they try and prepare for next week's FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United. Thus it will be a team somewhat cobbled together, and perhaps a little on the shy side when it comes to hard contact that Spurs face on Sunday.
We must not take anything for granted of course, and Spurs have their own absentees, including the suspended Atouba (who scored the winner in the August game), and now Noe Pamarot, who will be out for 6 to 9 months with his cruciate knee injury. Will Robbie Keane get a chance after his tantrums last week? I suspect he will be on the bench again, but surely he will replace Defoe, who needs to get on the scoresheet early.
The last three games between these teams have finished 1-0, with Spurs winning the last two league games, but losing that all-important FA Cup quarter-final just weeks ago. Revenge then is required, and hopefully the home crowd will instil the necessary urgency into the players. I predict a 2-1 to Spurs.
