The last time Spurs played Norwich was on 22nd July 2003, in a Friendly at Carrow Road. (Read the report here), when Spurs won an entertaining game 3-0. The line-ups of both sides have changed dramatically, even in such a short time. The last time we played the Canaries in a competitive game was on Easter Monday 17th April, 1995. Spurs won 1-0, with a Teddy Sheringham goal, and the Spurs team on that day was:- Walker; Austin, Calderwood, Mabbutt, Edinburgh; Anderton, Popescu, Barmby, Rosenthal; Sheringham and Klinsmann. Darren Caskey replaced Nicky Barmby that day and Erik Thorstvedt and Stuart Nethercott were the unused substitutes.Darren Caskey is currently playing non-league football for Hornchurch, looking for a way back to League status. I remember him especially for two goals in a great 3-3 draw against Liverpool in December '93.
In what was a 42 game season, Norwich came to us 8 places off the bottom of the table with 42 points. When we had beaten them 2-0 in the December fixture at Carrow Road, Norwich had sat in the top half, but were to suffer a terrible slide down the table, being relegated with 43 points. This was the side that in the previous season had managed a glorious win away to Bayern Munich, and no doubt the Canaries' fans still remember that night with great passion. Spurs finished that 94-95 season in their highest Premiership position of 7th, just missing out on a UEFA cup slot.
In the meantime then, both teams have suffered 9 years in a wilderness of sorts. Norwich fighting their way back to the elite league, with a stylish Nationwide Championship, and Spurs winning one minor trophy, but generally under-performing and under-achieving.
Now, things must change, and for Jacques Santini's new Spurs, this is just the sort of game that we must win to keep our momentum going. Bolton play Manchester United on Saturday, and unless they win, Spurs could be playing for third place after 5 games and a Top Three for London sides. However, we know only too well, how Spurs can fall against seemingly weaker opposition. Norwich must not be under-estimated, as they have performed with great credit away to Man Utd and Newcastle, where our not-so-old boy Gary Doherty scored a late equaliser!
Another ex-Spur in the Norwich line-up could be Paul McVeigh, who has scored plenty of goals in the lower league. McVeigh was described by some as a Greaves-type player, and left Tottenham for Carrow Road during the 99-2000 season, having made just 3 first team appearances for Spurs. McVeigh probably has not scored the percentage of goals per game that he should, but if he plays - look out!
There will be a great reception of course for Spurs' England heroes. Goal-scorer Jermain Defoe was surely man of the match against Poland, although Ledley King must have run him close with another assured performance at the back. Paul Robinson was not too stretched, but must have done enough to keep "Daisy" James out of the reckoning! Robbie Keane too is in for a marvellous reception, with his record-equalling goal for the Republic last week. That should keep Kanoute on the bench too!
Simon Davies may make the bench, although I suspect he will be left for another day. Atouba played for his country this week, so should displace John Jackson on the left midfield, and the main question will be whether or not Michael Carrick starts or waits on the bench. Despite the warning above, I do confidently expect Spurs to take the three points, and I'll plump for a 2-0 margin in front of Sky's Sunday audience. Don't be surprised if Ralph Coates is wheeled onto the pitch at some stage to re-live his 1973 League Cup winning goal against Norwich!
COME ON YOU SPURS!!
