Southampton was formed in 1885 by players from Deanery Football Club, which had itself had been formed by a group consisting mainly of teachers, most of whom were also connected with St. Mary’s Church. Hence the club was named Southampton St. Mary’s and the Church’s curate was elected as President. In a nutshell that is the reason for the naming of the Saints’ St. Mary’s Stadium, first used in 2001.
Spurs have yet to win a game at this venue, having lost their last 4 away Premiership games to this opposition, added to that disgraceful 4-0 exit a couple of years ago in the Third Round of the FA Cup. Spurs last away win against Southampton was on 20th November 1999, when Oyvind Leonhardsen scored the solitary goal in a game which featured no-one likely to play for Spurs this week (Dean Richards was in the Saints’ side), but did include four players in the Saints squad (Tessem, Lundekvam, Oakley, Pahars)that are at least still on their books.
Matt Oakley, has been out of action for much of this season, but did replace the suspended David Prutton in Saint’s Cup replay at Brentford on Tuesday. Spurs’ ankles will be safe from the threat of Mr Prutton who will miss almost the entire remainder of the season after his 10-match suspension. It looks like Matt Oakley will partner our own ex-skipper Jamie Redknapp in the central midfield.
Southampton have won just one of their last fifteen Premiership games, but that was against Liverpool on 22nd January. Since then they have lost just once, and drawn against top teams such as Everton and last week - Arsenal. With their relegation rivals Crystal Palace playing Manchester United this week-end, Harry Redknapp's side will see this game as an opportunity to gain ground in a game that they will say they simply must win!
Spurs can look back at last December's 5-1 thrashing of the Saints, when Jermain Defoe scored a hat-trick. Defoe is likely to start this game, having been rested in the midweek Cup game at Forest. If Spurs can only apply themselves fully to the task, then they could give their opponents a similar taste of medicine. I certainly take them to win, but think it will be quite close, with a scoreline of 2-1 to Spurs.
