Gary Megson's West Bromwich Albion have won promotion from Division One (now the Coca-Cola Championship) twice in three years, by making second place on both occasions. Megson is well into his fifth year as the "Baggies" leader, and is the longest serving manager since Don Howe's reign from 1971-1975. In between there have been no less than thirteen different names at the helm, and three of those served twice (Johnny Giles, Ronnie Allen, and a certain Ron Atkinson). Between 1992 and 1994, there was a Spurs connection as both Ossie Ardiles and Keith Burkinshaw had short spells in charge.

Perhaps the most eminent Spurs-West Brom connection is the name of Vic Buckingham, who managed the Midlands' side between 1953 and 1959, during which time West Brom won the FA Cup and finished runners-up in the old Division One, which they have won, but as long ago as 1919-20. Buckingham was a full back for Spurs between 1935 and 1949, and actually coached the Lilywhites for a while. Amongst the teams he managed after West Brom were Ajax, with whom he enjoyed success in 1960 and 1961, when Spurs were of course achieving fame of the highest order!

Players who have featured for both sides include Gerry Armstrong, Garth Crooks, Graham Roberts and Ruel Fox, all of whom played for the "Baggies" after their spells at The Lane.

Our hosts have not won a league game in 6 contests, but their promotion was secured well before the end of their campaign, so those three consecutive defeats are not representative of their true form and ability. In their first two Premiership matches this season, West Brom have achieved creditable draws at Ewood Park (where they took a lead), and on Sunday in a firmly contested Derby game with Aston Villa. This is 2 points more than they got in the first two games of their last Premiership campaign, losing narrowly at Old Trafford and badly at home to Leeds. (Check out the archived Premiership Reviews if you want more details on these matches and more).

So, we can expect a truly competitive game this Wednesday night, and our defence will have to keep an eye on Geoff Horsfield, who has a habit of falling over at a whim, and also scoring against us, having played for Birmingham and Fulham, before a spell at Wigan. A certain Mr Kanu will play, and no doubt get a hot reception from the travelling army of buoyant Spurs fans, who like their team, travel to the Black Country in high spirits and fine fettle after that impressive win at Newcastle. In only two days since that win, it looks like we have signed another 2 players, with Noe Pamarot and Michael Carrick both having medicals and discussing terms with Spurs today.

There is an outside chance that Robbie Keane will be fit for this game, but I would not expect him to start anywhere but on the bench, with the side perhaps being unchanged from Saturday. I don't suppose it will be long before Phil Ifil has to make way for more experience in the shape of Pamarot or Taricco, but he'll do a good job while he's there. What an initiation Ifil has had, performing well against two high class sides in front of two great crowds!

There'll be an army of Spurs fans at The Hawthorns, and I'm backing Spurs to come away with the points. I'll even say we'll win 2-0!
