It was a lovely warm sunny morning at The Lodge with the kick off delayed
by the late arrival of the visitors coach. The offical site had the kick
off at 11am whereas it was 11.30 on other sites. The teams stood for a
minute's silence in memory of Sir Bill which was observed perfectly by the
crowd of around 50.
The team lined up with Lee and Peprah at the back flanked by Kyriacou on
the right and Wright at left back. Lewis and Maghoma played in central
midfield with McKenna on the right side and Daniels on the left supporting
Thyer and Barcham up front. Apologies for any mistakes.
Spurs attacked the South Goal and soon had the goal under threat with Barcham,
Daniels and Lewis all going close as the midfield had most of the play.
After Pearce had pushed a shot from Daniels around the post, Charlie curled
the ball from the corner onto the other Charlie's head in the middle of the
box for the opener.
It was an eventful start for Lee as he had to go off
inside the first five minutes after a clash of heads and was off the pitch
for 15 minutes as he was patched up and finally returned in the number 18
shirt as his own had blood on it. Having scored the goal he was booked
later for something I did not see. (No jokes please)
The home side went
further ahead when the keeper failed to clear a free kick and McKenna drove
the ball low into the net from just outside the box. It looked like there
was only going to be one winner as despite a couple of good efforts the
Robins looked out of it.
The visitors coach kept the team out for a good talking to which really
got them motivated for the second half with a more determined approach
which knocked the home side out of their stride. They scored early in the
half which spurred them on with a fluky goal from Williams who hit a low
centre from the left wing which when through a forest of legs into the far
side of the goal with Lamp making sure.
Bristol brought on Rivers to add
height to their attack and he produced more openings up front which led to
their second as in a crowded area the ref gave a penalty for holding.
Forecast dived to his left to block Benyon's kick but was unable to do
anything to stop Rivers follow up. They had deserved their goal as they had
had the ball in the net before as well as having an effort cleared off the
line.
Holland responded immediately by bringing on Dawkins and Martin and
credit to Spurs they went for the visitors. Dawkins was played in by
McKenna and brought down on the edge of the City area with the ref deciding
that it was outside the box as he booked Hart. Maghoma, Barcham, Lee and
Dawkins all had chances before Holland sent on Heller for Kyriacou pushing
the extra man into the attack. Heller forced a corner which the visitors
failed to clear and Maghoma fired it low towards goal. Andy Barcham latched
onto it and hit it on the turn into the bottom right corner with two
minutes left. Bristol did not give give in and came back at spurs and when
Rivers laid the ball off Skuse was on hand to volley it past Forecast for a
last minute equaliser.
A fair result in the end with both sides playing their part in a game that
swung both ways. It was not our strongest side but then the visitors were
also playing a weakened side, according to one of their supporters. They
played well and promise even better with some of the lads not on show
today. The next match is also at the Lodge against Birmingham whom Bristol
beat last week on the 6th November. Before that there is the Reserves game
at Stevenage on Monday when Chelsea are the visitors.
