The last time we played Villa was on May 1st this year, which was one of our best and Villa's worst performances of the season, as we ran out 5-1 winners, with the "K" men (Kanoute, King and Kelly) scoring 4 of the goals and Andy Reid getting the other. Simon Davies had a great game, no doubt rubber-stamping David Moyles' interest in the Welsh winger, who has yet to make much impression upon Goodison Park, who might now realise that Spurs got the best of that deal. Villa fans won't like being reminded of another 4 goal pasting, as they are still smarting from Monday night's debacle at the hands of promoted West Ham.
Like Spurs, Villa have a proud history. They were co-founders of the Football League, and won the First Division Title 5 times in 7 years in the 19th Century, winning the Double in 1896-7. Spurs were the next team to emulate this marvellous feat in the famous 1960-61 season. Villa won the League Title twice in the 20th Century and after their win of 1980-1, they went on to lift the European Cup, since when the joy of the fans has basically been limited to a couple of League Cup wins under Ron Atkinson, then Brian Little. Rest assured, the natives will be restless this week, although vilified Chairman Doug Ellis has allowed the spending of some £13 million this summer to strengthen the squad. Those signings include strikers, Milan Baros, Kevin Phillips, along with defenders Wilfred Bouma (from PSV Eindhoven), and Aaron Hughes. Leeds' Erik Bakke, and Newcastle's James Milner are amongst the loanee arrivals at Villa Park, and Patrick Berger came on a free from Portsmouth.
David O'Leary is facing a big test this term, as he has been given some resources, but nowhere near the £100 million he had thrown at him in his time at Elland Road. One of his star players is Steven Davis, who made an impressive debut in the 1-0 home win against Spurs last November, and who also shone for Northern Ireland in the recent headline-making International in Belfast.
Most of the signings listed above played at Upton Park, but obviously failed to impress, but Berger was on the bench and Bakke has yet to be drafted in. Milan Baros scored the only goal in Villa's only win so far, in his debut in front of the Villa fans. Sorensen does not seem to be the keeper he was a couple of years ago.
So - there are a lot of negatives about Villa, and no doubt there will be a lot of concern over the strength of the new Spurs line-up. However, Spurs have only won once in their 13 Premiership visits to Villa Park (18th January, 2003), and you have to go back to the 86-87 season (when Villa were last relegated) for our previous away win. Goals have also been hard to come by since our first two games.
With little height in the Villa attack, Anthony Gardner might have been given his first rest of the season, but Michael Dawson will not be available due to a Hamstring injury in training, and it seems that this year Nourredine Naybet is to be the perpetual substitute. Teemu Tainio sat out the Liverpool game, and maybe he'll get a start this time, in an otherwise unchanged midfield. Robbie Keane may well have to wait till Tuesday's League Cup game at Grimsby before getting a start.
I'm going to take Spurs to win this one, by just one goal, and I'll go for a 2-1.
