When we played at Ewood Park in August, it was our third game of the season, and the 0-0 draw ensured that Spurs had a clean sheet in each of those first three games. Many travelling fans were disappointed not to see Edgar Davids start, and with Carrick on the bench, and Defoe not getting on till ten minutes before the end, it looked like Martin Jol was holding back more than a little before the next game which was against Chelsea.
There will be no such mechanisms in force this Sunday, as the Sky Tv cameras once again witness Spurs in a fourth v fifth battle!
Mark Hughes' side has had a terrific run. After just 6 games, they were in the bottom three, and then they dragged themselves out of the mire with an amazing 2-1 win at Old Trafford. That was their first win there since the early 1960s. For good measure, Blackburn achieved a league double over United with an exciting 4-3 win at the beginning of February. With 7 wins out of their last 10 games, it is no surprise to see Rovers challenging for a Champions League slot.
Whilst they have enjoyed this fine run, which includes away wins at Newcastle, Wigan and Middlesbrough, the win at Old Trafford was the only away success until Boxing Day. It would not be a new experience for Blackburn to achieve European football through league position, because they did that by beating us 4-0 at The Lane at the end of the 2002-3 season. Rovers also won the Premiership of course 11 years ago but have since spent some time in the lower league.
So, despite not having scored a goal against Spurs since November 2003, Blackburn will come to White Hart Lane full of confidence, and desire. They will miss Morten Gamst Pedersen, who has a hamstring injury, but they have several "hate" figures that will be driving them. I speak of Robbie Savage, ex-gooner (or should that be "goner") David Bentley, Craig Bellamy and Paul Dickov. Add to those names, that of Lucas Neill (who saw red in the game at Ewood Park) and Andy Todd, and you have the ingredients for an old-fashioned hard game.
Bentley impressed for the England under-21s during the week, and 5 of Spurs team will be bubbling after they featured in the senior side's win over Uruguay. Robinson, King, Carrick, Jenas and Defoe equalled the record of Clive Allen, Glenn Hoddle, Steve Hodge, Gary Mabbutt and Chris Waddle who played for England against Turkey in 1987.
Spurs have no new injury problems, and Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe will, as usual, be jousting for a start next to Mido. It's crunch time for Spurs, and as I have already written this week, it is time for them to start "doing it for themselves" and open a gap over the chasing pack for fourth place.
Blackburn are sending few fans, and the spare tickets have been snapped up by an eager home crowd, who will be baying for a much-needed home win. I'm not so sure that we will get what we want. No result would be a surprise to me, but I'll stick my neck out and predict a 2-1 to Spurs. After all, we will need the cushion to take with us to Stamford Bridge next week.
· Did you know? - There was a player called Bentley who featured in Spurs' very first League game against Blackburn. That was in January 1910, and the player was Spurs' half-back, Frank Bentley, who made a total of 50 appearances in our colours. Bentley never scored a goal for us, but he did play in the return match of the 1909-10 season, which was also played in March, and which Spurs won 4-0. Now that would be a good omen!
