Spurs and Bolton meet in Sky's Monday night game in a battle for third place in the Premiership table. Ten years ago, things were different, when we met Bolton at The Lane at Christmas, and had a chance of going second in the table. Sheringham and Armstrong scored for Spurs, but our former player Gudni Bergsson and Scott Green put paid to that, and Spurs ultimately finished outside the UEFA qualifying places, whilst Bolton got relegated.
Now we meet on equal footing, with Bolton in Europe and Spurs still trying to achieve that status. Bolton have won the last five Premiership meetings between these sides. It started with another Monday night televised game, in March 2003, when Jay-Jay Okocha scored a last minute penalty, conceded by Gary Doherty, who committed a foul on Djorkaeff - a player who was instrumental for Kaiserslautern in our last exit from a UEFA Cup game in 1999.
In November 2003, Kevin Nolan scored the only goal at White Hart lane, and in April Campo and Pedersen put paid to any hope Spurs had of taking anything back south. Last season Pedersen (again) and Jaidi scored the two goals that beat us 2-1 on the day we mourned Bill Nicholson, and then in February this year Kanoute got sent off for a second yellow, and Spurs conceded two late goals, when they had looked like getting a draw.
It is amazing to note that only three of the starting line-up for Spurs in that February match are likely to start tomorrow. (Robinson, King and Carrick) Robbie Keane is likely to be on the bench, and Mido (who was sub on that day) will no doubt start beside Jermain Defoe. Despite the options available to Martin Jol, he currently has a settled starting line-up, with Edgar Davids likely to replace Tainio in the team. Although Bolton had a taxing night on Thursday on a rain-sodden pitch, Sam Allardyce has enough options to field a team that will play in the determined style we are used to, with Kevin Davies alone up front, and top scorer Kevin Nolan amongst the 5-man supporting midfield.
Spurs are yet to be ubeaten away from home (in the League, at least), whilst Bolton have recently lost 5-1 at Chelsea and 2-1 at Wigan (who are beating everyone currently!). Bolton did lose at home to Everton earlier in the season.
It's time for Spurs to put this recent run against "The Trotters" to an end, and I'm going to take Spurs to win 2-0. The Spurs Odyssey report will be published on Tuesday morning.
Did you know?....that on 4th November 1938, Bert Spronson, a Tottenham Hotspur full back, was transferred to Manchester City. He had been at Tottenham for five months but had only played 9 matches. He began his career at Leeds United in 1933 where he became a very polished player. He played at Manchester City until 1950 and later became the trainer at Bolton Wanderers. He appeared in 283 League matches scoring 6 goals (for Man City). He played 11 times for England from 1937 until the outbreak of the War.
