The stand which will be packed with Spurs fans at The Valley this Saturday, is named after Jimmy Seed, who played 254 League and Cup games for Spurs between 1920 and 1927, scoring 77 goals. Seed played a big part in the winning goal in Spurs' 1921 FA Cup Final, but he spent the major part of his career as a player and a manager at The Valley, where he was manager between 1933 and 1956. Another ex-Spur was a less glorious manager for Charlton between 1981 and '82, and that was Alan Mullery, who now spends his time as a Sky Sports pundit.
Charlton have been in and out of the top flight in recent years, but under Alan Curbishley, one of the longest serving Premiership managers now, they have firmly established themselves without yet winning anything, or qualifying for Europe. Indeed, apart from their various promotions, the only major trophy to their name is the 1947 FA Cup Final, although they had been runners up the year before. Charlton's highest Premiership position has been 7th two seasons ago, and last year they looked great candidates for Europe, before entering a dismal phase when they won only one of their last 14 games dropping from 7th to 11th spot.
The "Addicks" record against Spurs since their return in 2000 has been good, and Spurs have yet to win a home Premiership game! We have won two of the last three games at The Valley, but lost 2-0 last March, thanks to goals by Thomas and Danny Murphy, who will get slated by the away support for turning down Spurs last year, but who is on the top of his form scoring three goals this term. Darren Bent is Charlton's top scorer, with 6 in all competitions so far.
For the third year running, this fixture will be played with Charlton above Spurs in the table. Last season, Charlton were 8th to our 9th, and the year before the gap was even bigger, with the home side in 5th and Spurs 12th before the game.
Charlton are a game behind most of the Premiership, having had to postpone their home game against Liverpool. They have won all 4 of their away games, but like Spurs lost at home to Chelsea.
This is as big a game as any between the two sides, with The "Addicks" in second place and Spurs fourth going into the week-end's fixtures, half of which will be played on Sunday, partly due to the European fixtures played this week. Both sides are of course hoping that they can be part of that calendar this time next year, but there is a long way to go yet.
Spurs COULD go second for a day with a two goal win, but that is a big ask, and with Charlton's number one keeper Dean Kiely now raring to go, goals could be even harder to come by for Tottenham. The home side are likely to feature former Spurs Luke Young and Chris Perry, Alexei Smertin, on loan from Chelsea, and former gooner - Jerome Thomas - scorer of one of the goals last season.
Spurs' starting line up may be little changed from the Fulham game, with Carrick still absent and hopefully Mendes getting another opportunity, and Aaron Lennon deserving another start on the right wing.
In my view, Spurs will be doing well to get a draw, and I shouldn't be surprised if there is a goal-less stalemate. It's a real toughie to predict, but I hope it's a humdinger of a game. I'm looking forward to it!
