It's a big, big week-end for Spurs, and the dream of Champions League football is still on! With a target of a minimum of 12 points from their five remaining games in their minds, Spurs have to negotiate a tricky fixture at Goodison Park on Saturday, before we face the formidable, and in-form Manchester United on Easter Monday.
When Spurs last met Everton on October 15th, we were third, and Everton were lying bottom of the table, after 7 games, due to their apalling start to the season, during which they not only lost their grasp on THEIR Champions League dream, but also quickly exited the UEFA Cup. Villareal were Everton's conquerors in the Champions League qualifier, and we will be cheering them on against "you know who" next week!
Spurs won this season's home game 2-0, thanks to headed goals by Mido and Jermaine Jenas, after nearly an hour of stout resistance by a five-man midfield. That win took us to second place in the table. Things started to improve for David Moyes' side, as they got a point off Chelsea in their next game, then won 4 of their next 6 games to drag themselves out of the relagtion zone. The steady progress has continued, with Beattie returning to goal-scoring form, but effectively they are now in no-man's land, with only pride and prize money to play for. That will be enough of course, and a packed house will be mostly behind the home team.
Arguably, Spurs could not wish for better opposition, as we have our best Premiership record against this side, who have yet to beat us at White Hart Lane (in the Premiership), and who have only managed two home successes. The last of these came exactly two years ago, and that was NOT a Good Friday for Spurs.
Our last game at Goodison Park was in October, 2004, when Noe Pamarot's header ensured we took away three points. That was the game when Jamie Redknapp got a booking off referee Graham Poll for his challenge upon Cahill. The yellow was later "upgraded" to red. Once again, only one season later, we are given cause to reflect upon the development of the Spurs squad, which included no less than 10 out of 16 players (9 have left) who will not take part in this match. One of those 9 was of course Simon Davies, who has not had the most successful of times at Everton, making 18 full appearances and 7 as sub. Simon scored one goal (at Birmingham) and that must have bounced about 4 times before it beat Maik Taylor!
Just think - we had "bog standard" footballer Silva on the bench that day, and this week, will possibly include Edgar Davids and Danny Murphy. On the other hand, with the United game looming, Martin Jol might choose to rotate in one or two positions. Wouldn't it be fitting if Murphy scored on Merseyside?
Spurs are almost at full strength and of course in good heart. Michael Dawson must miss this game, but will be back on Monday, so Ledley and Anthony will be at the centre of defence. The rest of the team will be a matter of choice for Martin Jol, but travelling fans will be hoping to see Young Player of the Year nominee Aaron Lennon in the starting line-up.
Everton have "drunken" Duncan Ferguson available after having served his suspension for the 8th red card of his career, but he only makes the subs bench these days. There are players to watch such as Cahill, Arteta, and Lee Carsley, who made his first full appearance of the season in last week's draw at Charlton.
This time last season, Spurs stumbled to a draw at home to strugglers West Brom, whereas Everton beat Man Utd 1-0. Saturday's task cannot be under-estimated. I feel we need a minimum of four points from our Easter fixtures, and I hope for three of those to come from this game. I'll plump for a one goal win for Spurs.
Saturday's referee will be Howard Webb.
COME ON YOU SPURS! LET'S LIVE THE DREAM!
