When Simon Davies signed for Everton at the end of last season, I thought then what a good deal it was for our club. Davies had never consistently recovered the form he had shown in his first two years at Tottenham, and failed to score for us last year. He did have a smashing game in our 5-1 victory over Aston Villa in May, which must have sealed the desire for the Welsh midfielder in David Moyes' eyes. Davies, of course dreamt of a Champions League campaign, as did the Toffees' fans, but it is history now how all deams of Europe have turned to dust.

Simon Davies did have a good game for his country last Saturday, but has yet to score for his new club. He will (if selected) get a great welcome back this week, but of course the friendship will end once he crosses the line to the field of play.

We are to Everton as Chelsea are to Spurs.

Everton have not beaten us in the Premiership at White Hart Lane and only twice in 26 Premiership games. The last time they did beat us at The Lane was in the 1985-86 season. This was their third consecutive away win, (followed by one FA Cup game in March 1986 ), during a three year period, when Everton won their last two League Championship titles under Howard Kendall. It was so long ago that Neville Southall was in goal for the Blues, and Peter Reid scored the only goal of the game. Both these ex-players featured in Sky's popular Reality Charity Football match last week, between Football legends and "Celebrities". Reid was determined to get a yellow card at least, and a portly Southall showed that his skills had not diminished with one spectacular save, and an all-round competent performance.

We do mention it often on these occasions, but it was 11th October, 1958 when Bill Nicholson was formally appointed the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur, and later that day, his new team beat Everton by a mighty 10-4 scoreline. The team had already been selected by outgoing manager Jimmy Anderson. The scorers were Ryden, Medwin, Harmer, Smith (4), Stokes (2), and Robb. Spurs only won 9 of their remaining 30 games, and finished 18th in the League. October 11th WILL fall on a Saturday in 2008, so perhaps we can arrange for Everton to be our visitors on that day! (Always assuming they do survive at this level)

Bottom of the table Everton play us, then entertain Chelsea next week in their desperate quest for Premiership points and a climb up the table. They couldn't wish for two worse fixtures at a time when they need so much to drag themselves off the bottom of the Premiership. Everton were co-founders of the Football League, and are the longest serving of all clubs in the top flight. They are also the second longest current top flight club, behind our "friends" from down the road. Tradition and history demand that their Premiership status is preserved, but Nottingham Forest's present situation proves that life does not always respect sentimental values.

The one Premiership game that Everton have won this season was at The Reebock Stadium, when Marcus Bent scored the only goal of the game. This was the one and only goal that Everton have scored so far in League Competition. It was The Blues' seventh Premiership win since they lost 5-2 at White Hart Lane On New Year's Day this year (in 24 games).

David Moyes brings his team to White Hart Lane with too many injury worries on top of those about form. Since Thomas Gravesen's exit to Real Madrid, Lee Carsley has become more of a key midfielder, but he is out till mid-December at least. Full back Pistone is also a long-term absentee. One time rumoured Spurs target van der Meyde has just returned to training and is not likely to travel this week, and Arteta is only just recovering from that frightening challenge in the UEFA Cup tie, that gave him concussion. Beattie is also a doubt, but he has yet to win over Evertonians. Tim Cahill will be one to watch, and no doubt big Duncan will be present for at least part of the game. Marcus Bent is another one to watch.

The bad news for Spurs fans is that Ledley King, who played so well for England on Wednesday, is decribed as only having a 50/50 chance. With Gardner out for another month, and Dawson pulling out of the second under-21 game, Spurs may have to call upon Tom Huddlestone to play next to Naybet. My money would be on Ledley to make it. The good news is that Mido, Carrick and Lee have all been declared fit, so Martin Jol will still have plenty to choose from.

Robbie Keane has an excellent record in this fixture, having scored in each of the three home games he has played, but Jermain Defoe will be fresh, and will surely start, having been an unused sub in the England games. I still fancy Robbie to come off the bench and perform cartwheels again, to cement a 3-1 win to Spurs, and prolong the agony for Everton. Mind you, all sequences have to come to an end, so look out for the odds on an Everton win and a goal for Simon Davies!
