Spurs have never played against Liverpool outside the top flight of League football. We have only ever won 5 away League games in 62 attempts.
When Spurs visited Anfield 21 years ago, in March 1985, they were lauded as "a tough nut to crack", and worthy opponents. After all, Spurs were 2nd in the table, whilst Liverpool were 4th. Spurs were the UEFA Cup Champions (and still had to face Real Madrid in the quarter-finals), and Liverpool were the reigning Division One Champions, having won their 15th title the year before.
Spurs had lost a (League) Cup Final (for the first time) against Liverpool in 1982, having led for much of the game, but suffered when Ronnie Whelan scored two goals - one a few minutes before the end of normal time, and then another in extra time. Ian Rush also scored to make it a painful 3-1 defeat for Spurs, who had been fighting for glory in four tournaments that season, only to finish with the FA Cup. A degree of revenge was gained in that 84-85 season, when Spurs put Liverpool out of the League Cup in the 3rd Round.
Anyway - back to March 16th, 1985, and Spurs gained a historic 1-0 victory - their first in the League at Anfield since 1912 - the year the Titanic sank. Garth Crooks scored the famous goal, and at last, Spurs put an end to an annual statistical quote in the press. Liverpool did overtake us to finish 2nd to our 3rd by the end of the season.
In all the years since, Spurs have only managed two more away League victories. Those were on 11th October, 1986 (1-0 - Clive Allen) and 25th August, 1993 (2-1 - Teddy Sheringham (2) ). Liverpool have one of the better records of any team against us, and we have rarely played on a level footing with The Reds in the last 20 years. The last three league games have been drawn though, and until late November, Spurs maintained a position above our hosts this week-end.
Liverpool recently had a run of 10 consecutive Premiership wins, that only ended with their last game at The Reebock Stadium, when they drew 2-2. Liverpool's best run of consecutive wins is 12, achieved between April and October 1990.
Their only move so far in the transfer window has been the signing of Dutch full back Jan Kromkamp, who has swapped places with Josemi, and will provide competition for Steve Finnan at right back. At the time of writing, Spurs have off-loaded three players (Davis, Mendes, Pamarot) to Portsmouth, without taking anyone on. That may change during the week-end, but I suspect not in time to affect the personnel available for this match.
Both teams had eventful Cup Ties last week, and I'll say no more about that unfortunate part of Spurs season. We now have 17 Cup Finals to play to try and keep a hold on a Champions League place. This match is 3rd v 4th, and is set up for a real humdinger. We could go third with a victory, but of course, Liverpool do have two games in hand - one of which is against Arsenal.
Liverpool's only real injury problem is the long term absence of Zenden. It will be interesting to see if Martin Jol gives Aaron Lennon a start, as even Jamie Carragher looked vulnerable against Luton's winger Vine in their cup-tie last Saturday night. Spurs fans can be joyous at the news that Ledley King, Edgar Davids and Young-Pyo Lee are all fit for this one, and with Mido also available for selection before he must return to Africa, it's going to be a full strength Spurs side (with Tainio also fit) that will give Liverpool a stern test.
A win for Spurs would of course be a dream, but it is not beyond the realms of possibility. I would be foolhardy to predict such an event, and even optimistic to go for a draw. I think I'll use reverse pyschology and predict a home win by one goal!
COME ON YOU SPURS!
