Two of the Liverpool squad will be coming to White Hart Lane with their tails between their legs this Saturday, after England's embarrassing defeat in Belfast on Wednesday night. I speak of Steven Gerrard, who definitely did not impress in either of England's games over the last week. The other England player Jamie Carragher should not be so downhearted about his performance, as I hold Ashley Cole and Rio Ferdinand more culpable for their lack of concentration at the time of Healy's goal for Northern Ireland. His shot beat our own Paul Robinson of course, who did get a touch to the shot, but again, was left too vulnerable by the afore-mentioned individuals who sometimes fail to play as well for their country as they do for their clubs. One wonders what means most to the players these days?
Anyway, back to domestic matters, and another long-awaited end to an International break is over. Since our last game against Chelsea, we have signed three players, all of whom could make their debuts this week. Lee Young-Pyo is almost sure to start at left back, but the other two new boys, Jermaine Jenas and Grzegorz Rasiak may have to wait. Personally, I fancy that Jenas may play in a five man midfield, with Defoe on his own up front. Rasiak has done more travelling this week, for a start, and hardly knows his team-mates. Of course, a five-man midfield may not go down too well after the events in Belfast. (Oh bugger, I mentioned it again!)
Liverpool have their own selection problems up front, with Morientes out for at least two weeks, and Cisse not fully fit. Cisse was one of many debutants (most on the Spurs side) in last year's game on the opening day of the season, scoring Liverpool's goal, with Defoe equalising for Spurs. It is interesting to note that Spurs included 7 players making their debut in that game (Robinson, Ifil, Naybet, Edman, Mendes, Davis, and Atouba), most of whom are unlikely to start this week. In fact two of them plus Jamie Redknapp and Fredi Kanoute have left the club. Have a look at the full team and see how Spurs have developed again in the last year!
Still on the subject of debuts, Michael Dawson made his impressive debut at Anfield in April, and with Ledley King only just back in training, Dawson will surely play this week. Nourredine Naybet may remain on the bench as he competes for the right sided central defensive position, with Anthony Gardner having the necessary height to deal with Peter Crouch who says he is fit and may be selected for the visitors.Late update - Martin Jol has announced Ledley King as fit to play.
Liverpool have only played two league games to date, due to their Champions League qualifiers and Super Cup Final victory (Congratulations to the Reds for their amazing win in May by the way), so they will be keen as mustard to pick up points. They have not displayed much of an adventurous spirit though, drawing at The Riverside 0-0 and just beating Sunderland 1-0, so this game may be another chess-board tactical game, at least until someone gets a goal.
Xabi Alonso did not play in last year's corresponding game, but was the star man at Anfield, and he'll be one to watch this week. Maybe Edgar Davids will have the policing job on him, or Teemu Tainio. There is plenty of other talent in the Liverpool side to be wary of, such as Garcia, new signing Sissoko, and Zenden, who arrived from Middlesbrough in the summer. Gerrard will no doubt be out to prove something to!
Both last season's games were drawn and we have not lost a league game to Liverpool since the 2002-3 season. I fancy Spurs to be sharper out of the blocks this week, with the English contingent anxious to prove to Sven what a job they could do for his qualification hopes. I'll go for a 2-0, with Defoe to score first.
