Spurs travel to The City of Manchester Stadium in good heart, following two wins from their three festive matches to date, but especially as a result of the return to form demonstrated against Newcastle on Saturday. We have also won 5 of our last 7 games.
Until recently, Stuart Pearce's City season matched our own. They made an excellent start to the season, unbeaten for their first five games, and stayed just ahead of us for the first few weeks of the season. Like us, they lost to lower league opposition (Doncaster) in the Carling Cup. Unlike us, they have lost the winning touch in recent weeks, losing 8 of their last 15 games, and three of their last five. City have yet to record a win over Christmas this year.
Spurs are not the opposition they would wish for ideally, as you have to go back to October, 1994 to find their last home win against us. That was in the closing days of Ossie Ardiles reign, as City ran out 5-2 winners with goals by ex-Spur Paul Walsh (2), Niall Quinn, Steve Lomas, and Gary Flitcroft. Both Spurs goals were scored by Ile Dumitrescu, one of the "famous five" of Anderton, Sheringham, Klinsmann, Barmby and Dumitrescu. Guess which one didn't make the game through injury?!!
City have had a couple of spells outside the top league since then, of course, but (to state the obvious), Spurs have yet to lose at the new stadium, where they have played two Premiership and one FA Cup game. There have however been some ignominious results at White Hart Lane that I prefer not to mention!
Despite their loss of winning form, City are still settled in the top half, and they do have goal-scoring power and pace in the shape of Andrew (mustn't call him Andy!) Cole and Darius Vassell. Cole has scored 8 and Vassell 5 league goals. Joey Barton has been in good nick recently too, knocking in five league goals.
Spurs definitely miss Ledley King and Andy Reid with longish term injuries, and they travelled today with Calum Davenport and Pedro Mendes added to the squad, due to late doubts over Teemu Tainio (illness) and Edgar Davids (injury). Former City man Michael Brown will be hoping for a game. He was the provider of the pass that led to a stunning winner in last season's corresponding fixture, when Fredi Kanoute rifled a shot into the top corner.
This preview is submitted before the result of tonight's Arsenal - Man Utd game is known, but I am hoping for a United victory and a City defeat to put Spurs 7 points ahead of the Gooners, but more importantly to get a firmer hold on that Champions League slot.
I think this will be an open and entertaining game for the Sky Tv cameras, and I'll go for a 2-1 to Spurs.
