Spurs travel to Old Trafford this week in good form and above the "Red Devils" in the Premiership - not for the first time in recent years. This last happened as recently as September, 2002, when Spurs were 2nd and United were 10th, after 6 games. Now we are again 2nd, but United are only just behind us (with a game in hand), ready to take over the pursuit of Chelsea with a home win that normally would be taken for granted.
After all, Spurs have only ever won 10 of 68 away league games against this opposition. None of those wins has been in the Premiership, and the last time it happened was in 1989. Mind you (and you have been waiting for me to mention this, haven't you!), it is impossible to preview this game without reference to "the goal that wasn't" - Pedro Mendes' stupendous effort on January 4th, seen by the world-wide TV audience. That "goal" has even been voted in various Spurs circles as the goal of the season, and whilst Roy Carroll is no longer with United, the Spurs fans are bound to chant "1-0 to the Tottenham" this Saturday.
This year just might be different, as high-flying Spurs face a test over their next two matches that could confirm them as Champions League qualifying-contenders. After United, it's the Gooners at home the following Saturday. Three points or more from these two games would be highly satisfactory, I suggest.
We have won our last three games, and as all Spurs fans know, despite our strength in depth, and the coveted high position, our team has yet to hit consistency as far as entertaining, flowing football is concerned. Tough as the opposition will be, we always look forward to these games, as we know our opponents will not be sitting as many men as possible behind the ball, will play their natural attacking game, and therefore give a footballing side a genuine chance at the other end, if they can show real creative flair.
It says something for the continuing development at White Hart Lane that the hero of that infamous game, Mendes, is hardly likely to feature this week, as he struggles to find a place even in Martin Jol's first 16. Mendes seems to be Carrick's deputy, and as Carrick is fit, Pedro will be lucky to get on the bench. Jol seems to have settled on his "bext eleven" at present, so last week's starting line-up is likely to be retained. Hopefully Teemu Tainio will get involved at some stage, although if Aaron Lennon has succeeded in opening up the United defence, then Tainio's strength may not be required.
United have selection problems, due to Ryan Giggs' injury sustained this week, and the negative publicity surrounding Ronaldo may mean he is mentally un-prepared for a competitive game. One of my favourite United stars of last season - Gabrielle Heinze - is out for the best part of the season. United do still have some strength in depth, though, and with van Nistelrooy and Rooney on top of their game, they will be as much of a handful as ever. Our Ledley and Michael Dawson are capable of holding the fort, though, and I am predicting a draw - maybe 1-1.
· Did you know? - Man Utd have not won a home Premiership game since August 20th against Aston Villa. Mind you, they have only played two games in that time - a draw against Man City, and a sureprise defeat against Blackburn
