It seems like an age since we last played a Premiership game at St. James' Park, and indeed it is! Nearly 20 months ago, in our first away game of the 2004-5 season, a Santini-managed Spurs side defended magnificently and took the spoils through that wondrous Thimothee Atouba goal.
It's amazing to think that of 32 players in the teams and on the bench that day, only 12 could possibly feature this Saturday. There has also been a chance of management on each side of the fence too. Sir Bobby Robson tried one of his triple substitutions to get back into the game, but it was all to no avail, and before long Freddie Shepherd stuck the knife in, and appointed Graeme Souness, who was to become one of the most hated Tyneside managers in his short reign. Here are the teams that played that day:-
Newcastle (4-4-2):- Given; Carr, O'Brien, Hughes, Bernard; Milner (sub Kluivert, 75), Jenas (sub Dyer, 75), Butt, Robert (sub Ameobi, 75); Shearer (Capt.), Bellamy
Subs not used:- Harper; Elliott
Spurs (4-4-2):- Robinson; Ifil, Naybet, King, Edman; Redknapp (Capt.) (sub Brown, 69), Davis, Mendes, Atouba (sub Jackson, 89); Defoe, Kanoute (sub Gardner, 79)
(Spurs played in their all-yellow strip)
Subs not used:- Keller; Silva
We did travel to Newcastle last March, when the Geordies got their revenge in a 1-0 FA Cup quarter-final victory, thanks to a Patrick Kluivert goal, and a number of rough Styles decisions (Nothing new there then!). Then, as this year, Newcastle, and Alan Shearer, experienced Cup disappointment. It was a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Man Utd that did for them last year, and of course, Mr Shearer has seen his last chance of glory in black and white disappear in this year's quarter-final.
Shearer, who was persuaded by Souness to postpone his planned retirement, has scored just 6 Premiership goals this term. Whilst he has at last beaten Milburn's record, he must wish he had stuck to his original decision, as the support around him has dissipated, and a woeful defence has crumbled too often. Is Shearer to be "The Chosen One" to replace stand-in Glenn Roeder? I don't think I would wish the task of being Freddie Shepherd's lackey upon anyone.
The Toon are still beset by injury problems. Owen, who was injured in the game at White Hart Lane is way off recovery. Scott Parker has now gone down with glandular fever and will be out for the rest of the season, whilst Babayaro and Bramble are less onerous absentees. Last week, at The Valley, Roeder had to give a defensive debut to Craig Moore, and is also having to rely upon Ramage, whose inexperience was also exposed in that game. Boumsong - once a star in Scotland - has been a flop and a liability this season.
So - all is not well with the Toon - but they will have the best part of 52,000 baying for goals this week. Martin Jol has only one injury doubt, and that is Teemu Tainio, who has gone down with a viral infection. I fancy Mido to start this game, and hope for the genius of Robbie Keane to start beside him, after his classic goals on Monday night. Who's to say that Jermaine Jenas (making his first club appearance back on Tyneside) will not score for his new team?
This is not the toughest of Spurs' run-in games, but it will be a difficult task. We need to quieten that crowd early on. I fancy us to win 2-0.
Looking for an omen? These two teams met in Match 32 of last years Premiership. (This is Match 32 of this year's competition) The game was played at White Hart Lane and Spurs won 1-0! Indeed, we have won the last 4 Premiership games between these sides.
COME ON YOU SPURS!
