This week-end we face Newcastle United, who might be fresher than us, due to their controversial mid-week postponement. Their fans could still be angry though, due to the probable transport problems, as there is a potential tube strike commencing at midday on Saturday. It is ironic, that Graeme Souness, and Alan Curbishley were both quoted before Christmas bemoaning the holiday fixture list, and on Wednesday night they got a wish granted, but not in the way they would have liked.
Newcastle had a terrible start to the season. After getting knocked out of the Intertoto Cup, they started at the wrong end of the table, and it has taken them till now to reach the half-way point. Michael Owen of course has been a big signing, and successful too, when he plays, with 7 goals in 9 games. Three of those came at Upton Park, when the Toon won 4-2. It used to be said that New castle travelled badly, but some of their best results have been away, winning 3-0 at Blackburn and West Brom. Their recent one goal victory over Arsenal made us happy, of course, as the results of that week-end ensured we would be above our rivals over Christmas. Newcastle made a harder job of beating their local rivals, at St. James' Park, when Sunderland lost by the odd goal in five.
Newcastle's Alan Shearer has managed just 4 goals this term, and needs one more to match the legendary Jackie Milburn's 200 goals. Obviously Shearer is going to beat that record, but it can wait till later in the season, when he can retire and Newcastle can plan another statue.(There is one for "Wor Jackie" near St. James' Park).
Injuries have plagued Souness's team all season, and England under-21 star Steven Taylor sustained a nasty injury at Anfield and will be missing for a while.Emre and Kieron Dyer and two of the bigger names missing, and Lee Bowyer won himself a three match suspension for his antics at Liverpool. Ex-Spur Stephen Carr returns to the squad after a hernia op, and Scott Parker may be fit to start.
Newcastle's first choice defence has not been at all reliable this season, and it may be to Spurs advantage if Bramble plays alongside Boumsong, who was so impressive in Scotland, but has not always been comfortable at this level.
This will be Jermaine Jenas's first game against his old team, having signed for us in August. He will be determined to put on a great show, and I won't mind at all if he scores the winner, as he did for Newcastle when they visited us on January 29th 2003. (Read the match report here)
In my opinion, Spurs desperately need Teemu Tainio to be fit and bring back some grit to the middle, but he doesn't appear to be ready yet. Whoever Martin Jol chooses to play beside Dawson (Gardner or Pamarot) will have a big test. I'd fancy Pamarot myself, as he has looked sharp during his comeback games for the reserves, and may be better-equipped to match the potential strength and pace of Shearer and Owen respectively.
It's going to be yet another hard game, and with Spurs struggling for form, a little difficult to call. I have to side with Spurs though, by a 2-1 scoreline.
I wish all readers a very Happy New Year! (My match report will be posted after the New Year's Eve festivities)
