The last time Spurs travelled to The Stadium of Light (November 2002), we lost 2-0 to goals by Kevin Phillips and Tore Andre Flo, both of whom have long since left The Black Cats. Phillips is in form for the resurgent Aston Villa, whilst Flo was last heard of playing for Serie A side Sienna in the 2004-5 season.
One of Sunderland's star players in that season was Julio Arca, but he missed all but 13 Premiership games. He will be available this Sunday, unlike one of the only other survivors from that fixture - defender Stephen Wright, who earnt himself a one-match suspension for two yellow cards last week. Stephen Caldwell and Dean Whitehead also have to miss this game, so Mick McCarthy's worries are not lessening!
After beating Spurs, Sunderland managed only one more win in the Premiership in the 2002-3 season, and that was against Liverpool, which is still their last Premiership home victory!
As I mentioned before the home game this season, Sunderland achieved a Premiership low tally of 19 points, and of course they are well on target to beat that record, with only 9 so far this term.
Spurs though must not be complacent, and I am sure they will have that message well-drilled into their football brains. The Black Cats must be approaching the time when they truly realise their fate of relegation, and the players will relax, forget their nerves and play flowing, attacking, and threatening football! Remember, they gave Newcastle a hard time at St. James Park, only lost narrowly at home to Chelsea recently, and also held out until the last 10 minutes last week at Upton Park, with only 10 men.
By the time this game is played, Spurs closest rivals, Liverpool, Arsenal, Wigan and Bolton could all have lost points. (I am hoping for drawn games involving these teams who meet on Saturday. Arsenal entertain Bolton, whilst Liverpool are at Wigan) That gives us the opportunity to even take third place, and whilst the FA Cup Fifth Round is played next week, Spurs could beat Wigan and make a firm statement of intent as they reach the business end of the season.
Teemu Tainio is unlikely to be fit in time for this one, and maybe Edgar Davids will need another week to be fit enough. Mido has reconciled the situation with his coach, and may yet take part in the Final of the African Cup of Nations, so is unlikely to be available for Spurs this week. There must be a question about his temperament now, and he really will be on probation at Spurs for the rest of his loan period. Latest team news (Fri)Davids has made the squad and Lee is back too! Tainio and Reid definitely out. Barnard doubtful with a foot injury
Michael Dawson will return from suspension, and Danny Murphy may get his debut, but even if Spurs are otherwise forced to field the same team as against Charlton, they should surely beat Sunderland comfortably. I am not counting chickens, but will predict a 3-0 win for Big Marty's men.
