Spurs played West Bromwich Albion 4 times last season, and only won once! We drew at The Hawthorns in both our Premiership and FA Cup games, winning the replay convincingly by three goals to one. It wasn't like that in our Premiership encounters though, as by the time Bryan Robson's side met us in April this year, they had lost only three out of thirteen games after a disastrous 5-0 home defeat to Liverpool on Boxing Day last year. The Baggies had only 10 points after 19 games, and looked doomed to fulfil the usual prophecy of the bottom side at Christmas never avoiding relegation. They did manage just that though, thanks to a rather miraculous set of results including their own last day win against Portsmouth.
Both the Premiership games last season were drawn 1-1, and the away game was the second of the season, in August 2004. Zoltan Gera got the home side off to a great start with a third minute goal, but Defoe matched that before the break, after a one-two with Fredi Kanoute, following a move started by Atouba.
Jermain Defoe scored in three of the 4 games between the sides, and after his cracking goal against Birmingham, will be hoping for a start on Wednesday.
West Brom are doing better this season, having made a brighter start, and also having captured a few decent scalps at home. They have beaten Arsenal, and they are one of the sides to have scored 4 against Everton. The "Baggies" last home win was 2-0 against Manchester City, who we face next Wednesday.
Despite their improved points tally, Bryan Robson's side have loitered just outside the bottom three for most of the season, and with an away match at Anfield on Saturday, they will be very keen to pick up points from this game. Perhaps West Brom will see a chink in the Spurs' stronghold defence, if Ledley King does not make it after picking up a groin strain on Boxing Day.
However, it is time for Spurs to move on, to give us some performances as well as results, and in a game where the home side will come at us, surely allowing us to play our attacking game, I'm going for another 2-0 victory to keep our Champions League challenge very much alive. See you there!
