West Bromwich Albion were one of the twelve founding members of the Football League - established this week in 1888. The other founding clubs which are currently in the Premiership, were Aston Villa, Blackburn, Bolton and Everton.
Down the years, West Brom have flitted between the top two flights of the League, but spent one season in Division Three in 1991-2. The club's longest spell in the old Division One was 24 years between 1949 and 1973, during which time they won the FA Cup in 1954 and 1968. The '68 win was of course thanks to that famous goal by the late Jeff Astle - a legend at The Hawthorns - and well known to Skinner and Badiel's Fantasy Football viewers. Frank Skinner and the BBC's Adrian Chiles are amongst the "Baggies" famous fans.
Only 6 men have played for both Spurs and West Brom. Each of them played first for Spurs, rather than the other way round. These were Freddie Cox (Spurs 1938-49 - West Brom 1953-54). In modern times Steve Walford, Gerry Armstrong, Garth Crooks, Graham Roberts and Ruel Fox have played for both teams. Ossie Ardiles and Keith Burkinshaw had brief spells in charge in the early nineties. Spurs manager Martin Jol has a great affiliation with West Brom of course, having made 63 appearances for them between 1981 and 1983. Big Marty was a defender, but did manage four goals for West Brom in that time. He had more hair then, too!
The "Baggies" can say that they are one of just 5 sides to have beaten Spurs this season. At The Hawthorns on December 28th, ex-Arsenal striker Kanu scored both goals that sent Spurs fans home in a post-Christmas state of depression.
However, after their "great escape" last season, Bryan Robson's side have again endured a season-long battle against the drop. Recent form (only 2 wins in 11 games since beating Spurs) has been poor, and at Craven Cottage they suffered a 6-1 battering. West Brom have put up decent fights against Chelsea and Manchester United, and in the circumstances, we know that our visitors will fight all the way to stop us getting the three points we desire.
The postponement of the Portsmouth-Arsenal game means that Spurs will start the game in fourth place, but only on goal difference from Mark Hughes' progressive Blackburn side. Bolton, will still have two games in hand at the end of the week-end (at home to Middlesbrough, and away to Birmingham) and are very much in the ongoing fight for fourth.
Spurs have virtually a fully fit squad, with Mido back in contention. He may be the only change to last week's starting line-up, with Kelly again likely to get the nod over Stalteri.
The referee for this game will be Chris Foy, who officiated in the same fixture last year. Spurs have yet to win a Premiership game where he has been in charge!
I suspect the Sky viewers, and of course those in the ground, will see an entertaining game, with a few goals. I fancy Spurs to win 3-1.
