Profile of Jermaine Jenas - 28.04.07

An analysis of Jermaine Jenas's contribution to the Middlesbrough v Spurs game on 28.04.07

Hardly a week has gone by this season (or last for that matter) when there has not been a debate about the qualities (or otherwise) of Jermaine Jenas. During today’s game at The Riverside, I did my best to log all significant contributions by Jenas, whether they were good or bad. This is what I recorded:-

5 – A poor cross-field pass.
11 – A decent ball into a threatening area for Robbie Keane
15 – Poor delivery after a short corner, but he was involved in the follow-up move when Spurs won the ball back.
17 – A good ball out of defence to Robbie Keane who tried a pass to Malbranque
20 – Jenas won a midfield battle, passed to Keane who lost the ball. Jenas then made three efforts to win back the ball in the middle.
22 – as mentioned in the match report, won the ball off Viduka and sent Berbatov away.
25 – successful pass in midfield.
30 – good pressure on opponents in Spurs half and successfully defends situation
35 – was fouled and awarded a free kick
36 – wins midfield battle with Rochemback
40 – in advance midfield position, receives from Zokora, turns 1 player but then loses the ball
42 – good tussle in the middle and the ball runs for Zokora who wins a corner.
43 – Jenas takes corner which goes straight to Schwarzer
46 – makes the pass to Ghaly which leads to Berbatov’s goal!
52 – completes short pass in middle to Zokora
53 – gets fouled but loses ball, and this leads to a Boro corner.
65 – failed pass intended for Berbatov, which leads to Boro’s first goal.
69 – wins header in the middle that leads to a decent Spurs move.
76 – good exchange of passes with Dawson and Lennon
78 – sweeping up at the back, and makes good pass to Chimbonda
83 – involved three times in the build-up for Keane’s second goal!
89 – good ball to Keane who takes the ball to the bye-line but hits his cross at Schwarzer
90+ - wins a header in the middle.

In summary, I think that Jenas had a good game. He was integral to two of our goals, and made useful interventions both in defence, and in attack. He needs to improve with his delivery of corners.

I wrote earlier this week that Jenas has the best scoring record of any of our midfielders, is often to be found ahead of the front men, and behind the defence. We all know he has a great engine, and like any player he does not always deliver the goods. Today's evidence shows what useful contributions he does make to the team. Let the debate continue!
