You could almost call it a European night at White Hart Lane tomorrow, as both teams have all to play for. A win would ensure Spurs qualification for the UEFA Cup, whilst Rovers must win to stand an outside chance of making the top seven. Their final game on Sunday could be a showdown with Reading.
These two teams have a habit of meeting at the end of the season in recent years. Two years ago, having lost at Middlesbrough in our penultimate game, we had to beat Rovers by two clear goals, and we also needed Manchester City to beat Middlesbrough. Our hopes of Europe fizzled out as we drew 0-0 and Boro got a point at The City of Manchester Stadium. On that occasion, Blackburn were desperate for a point, as they were not far from the relegation places. We also met at the end of the 2003-4 season (Spurs won 1-0), and I should not really mention the debacle at the end of 2002-3. (We lost 4-0)
Last season's corresponding game was played in March, and Spurs won it 3-2, thanks to two goals from Robbie Keane, the first of which has been voted 5th out of 25 "Golden Goals" in a poll being featured in this season's programmes. Robbie set us on the way in the 9th minute, when he collected a quickly taken throw-in (near the corner flag) ran towards goal, firstly flicking the ball over Savage, then rounding Rovers’ skipper Andy Todd, before firing past Friedel for a quite beautiful goal. Robbie put us two up before the break, but on-loan Pongolle soon got one back, then, after Bellamy hit a 67th minute equaliser, it was Mido who scored Spurs winner at close range from a Lennon low cross.
When we met at Ewood Park in November, both teams were in the bottom half of the table, desperate for points. Both had to settle for a draw in a hard-fought and at times controversial game in which Tugay was sent off for the foul on Ghaly which led to Spurs' penalty, scored by Defoe. Hossam Ghaly was himself shown red for violent conduct towards full back Michael Gray. At the time it appeared that referee Phil Dowd had also sent off Martin Jol, but that was not the case.
A new Spurs shirt has been unveiled today, which is very much akin to the Blackburn strip. The strip is very much a tribute to Spurs' early days, when some of the founder members of our club were quite smitten with Blackburn, who won the FA Cup three times in succession in the 1880s. The new Spurs shirt is not a home strip, but follows the policy started with this season's chocolate strip, harking back to our early years. Spurs will be celebrating their 125th anniversary later in the year.
There will be no time for sentiment tomorrow night of course, when no quarter should be given. Ricardo Rocha is a doubt for Spurs, who will continue to miss Lee, Mido, and Stalteri. Anthony Gardner is therefore likely to carry on where he left off, efficiently at Charlton at left back.
Joint Barclays Players of the month for April - Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov will surely start, as Spurs will want to win this game, so they can relax on Sunday.
David Dunn is doubtful for Rovers, who will miss Khizanishvili (a relief for commentators, and reporters alike!), Robbie Savage and Steven Reid. Spurs fans will miss Savage too, but we want their voices to spread nothing but positivity to the players. Blackburn might have timed their run as well as Spurs, and with Benni McCarthy and Jason Roberts in goal-scoring form (not to mention Matt Derbyshire), Spurs need to be at their best to get all three points.
I'll plump for home and crowd advantage making a big difference in this game, and go for 3-1 to Spurs. Wouldn't it be great just to party on Sunday?
