Don't say it too loudly, but Spurs are a match or two away from recording a new record figure of successive home victories in all competitions! The current run of 12 home wins on the trot started after we lost 3-0 at Anfield in September. Spurs had been holding their own, until that disastrous miss by Jermaine Jenas, who had started a run from 20 yards behind Edgar Davids, who provided what should have been an easy assist for the crucial first goal. Jenas missed, Liverpool countered - not once, not twice, but three times, as the Spurs heads fell.
Liverpool will be as difficult to beat as any team we have faced this season, and that includes Chelsea. For a start, we haven't beaten them for nearly three years since January 2004, when Robbie Keane and Helder Postiga (scoring his first Premiership goal after 5 months at Spurs) put us two up, before Harry Kewell got one back for the Reds. Read the match report here
Harry Kewell has been a long term absentee from the 'Pool side this season, but the only other such absence is that of Mohamed Sissoko, who suffered a dislocated shoulder injury in a League Cup game at Birmingham in November.
Don't be fooled by Liverpool's defeat at Ewood Park on Boxing Day. Rafael Benitez's side did everything but score. Robbie Savage held Bellamy back as he tried to pull the trigger in the 6 yard box, Alonso hit the woodwork, Crouch missed an easy header and Friedel pulled off saves galore. Benni McCarthy's goal was the first conceded by Liverpool for 8 games, and after a poor start away from home, they have been scoring for fun in recent weeks too.
Goals have generally been hard to come by for Liverpool though. Their top scorers in the Premiership are Dirk Kuijt (Kuyt) and Craig Bellamy. Kuyt did not start on Boxing Day, so I think he may start next to Bellamy for this game, leaving Crouch on the bench. Steven Gerrard has not been so prolific so far this season, but of course, he and players such as Garcia, Gonzales and Alonso are likely to weight in. It's a good job they are not all likely to start!
Spurs then will need to be at their best for this one. There were rumours around on Wednesday that Berbatov and Defoe were doubts, receiving treatment, but I am hopeful they will renew their partnership, and also hope that Aaron Lennon might yet be fit for this vital game. Tom Huddlestone (20 today - 28/12/06) will surely hold his place, and whilst Danny Murphy would love to start against his old team, if Lennon is fit he surely will replace Ghaly.
One thing is for sure - it is bound to be another entertaining game. This really could go either way. If the Berbatov-Defoe pairing is fit, then I think Spurs can snatch victory, and continue that possible record run of home victories!
