The draw for the last 32 of the UEFA Cup has been made, but for now, Spurs and their fans have to focus on this Sunday's Premiership fixture at The City of Manchester Stadium, where they have yet to lose a game. Potentially, Spurs have to play 15 games before they face Feyenoord in February.
Cast your minds back 5 years to the 2000-2001 season, when, under the management of Gooner George Graham, Spurs had to wait till 10th February, 2001 for their first away win of that season (Report available here). City then were playing at Maine Road, but Spurs won there again in their last match at the old ground in December 2002. Could there be a better place for Spurs to go this week-end? After all, City have not beaten us at home since 1994, and Spurs have won the league double over this opposition for the last two seasons.
Well, actually, despite City's moderate overall form, they do have an almost impregnable league record at home this season. In 8 Premiership games, Stuart Pearce's side have conceded only one goal - to Fulham. They can include the scalp of Arsenal in that record of 4 wins and 4 draws, with 7 goals to their name in those matches. Still, City have had little to shout about, apart from a purple patch at Villa Park in November, where they won 3-1. The Blues will be stinging somewhat after their Derby defeat at Old Trafford last week.
Spurs have been flying in their last three home games, scoring 10 goals to 3 against, beating Middlesbrough, Charlton and Dinamo Bucuresti with some entertaining football. Spurs are still not consistent and this week they will still be without Keane, and Jenas, with Zokora also suspended. Teemu Tainio is described as doubtful, but Martin Jol has no new injury problems.
Pearce has one or two concerns. Sun-Jihai and Danny Mills are long term absentees. Hamann will miss this match. (He's played just 371 League minutes so far at his new club) Ben Thatcher has another suspension to serve, as has striker Corradi, so it looks as if there will be opportunities for City's youngsters. Micah Richards qualifies for this description at just 18, but he is an established team member, and now a Full England International to boot!
Michael Dawson does have to sit this game out, after 5 yellows, so it looks as if Calum Davenport will partner Ledley at the back. There perhaps, Spurs will be vulnerable, as King and Dawson have such a wonderful partnership. However, Martin Jol has plenty of choice in other departments, and perhaps Mido, who scored the first of Spurs two goals last season, will get a start in this game. After all, with Robbie Keane out, the remaining three strikers have to share the duties of the 6 games we face in the next 17 days.
It's time for Spurs to break out of their hitherto dull away mode, and to play the game as they do at White Hart Lane, to be adventurous, entertain, and to win! I'll take them to win 2-1.
