The news has been announced this week that Newcastle are to be awarded the Intertoto Cup, when they play their next home UEFA game in February, as they are the team of all the qualifiers from this summer's pre-season tournament that has made the furthest progress in the UEFA Cup proper. It will be The Toon's first trophy for 37 years, since winning the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969. Their last domestic trophy was the FA Cup in 1955.
Newcastle were four-times winners of the old Division One Championship (pre-Premiership days), but their last such win was back in 1927. They did win promotion after winning the modern day Division One trophy in 1993 under Kevin Keegan's management. Currently, the only league that Newcastle top is the Physio Room Premiership injury list.
At the time of writing (Thursday), N'Zogbia, Bramble, Duff, Moore, Bernard, Krul, Carr, Ameobi, and of course Michael Owen are injured, although I suspect that Damien Duff will be fit for Saturday's game. Owen has played just 10 Premiership games since being signed for a Newcastle record £16 million in September 2005. One of those goals was at Ewood Park in that month in a 3-0 win. Newcastle, who had an even worse start to this season than Spurs, have regained some form recently, and repeated their ability to win at Blackburn two weeks ago, with a 3-1 win.
Perhaps a big reason for Newcastle's resurging form has been Obafemi Martins' sudden finding of his old goal-scoring prowess. We Spurs fans saw Martins playing for Inter Milan in a pre-season friendly, when I was not over-impressed, but he was reputed to be the fastest striker around.
Newcastle are stinging a bit after Chelsea's mid-week Carling Cup victory, and Martins hit the underside of the bar with a great shot that could have led to a different result.
Despite their injury list, Newcastle still featured star players on Wednesday night, such as Given; Emre, Butt, Dyer, Solano, Parker, Milner and Martins. Giuseppe Rossi, on loan from Manchester United is not to be sniffed at either, should he get a chance to prove his worth. Alberto Luque has been less impressive, but still gets the occasional chance. Finally, former Man City midfielder/striker Antoine Sibierski has been a blessing for The Toon, scoring 6 goals in all competitions this term, three of which have been in Europe, where, like Spurs, Glenn Roeder's side topped their Round Two Group, which included Celta Vigo, Fenerbahce, and conquerors of West Ham - Palermo. Newcastle will feel optimistic about their next opponents in Europe - Belgian side Zulte-Waregem.
Having dropped into the relegation zone during an opening spell, when they lost 7 of their first 11 Premiership games, Newcastle's recent run has been a transformation, losing just 1 of their last 7 games - and that was a tight 1-0 at Stamford Bridge.
The crowds have been deserting St. James Park sometimes this season, but for this pre-Christmas bonanza, I fancy there will be a full house.
Last season's corresponding fixture was played on April Fools' Day, and it was an inauspicious occasion for former United midfielder, Jermaine Jenas, who made that horrific miss in front of the Gallowgate End. All the goals came in the first half-hour, as Spurs lost 3-1. Jenas of course will miss out this time, as will Spurs scorer that day - Robbie Keane.
Chimbonda and Ledley King will surely return to the defence, after being rested on Wednesday, and Berbatov must start next to Jermain Defoe. The Spurs midfield could be transformed too by the return from suspension of Didier Zokora, and return from injury of Hossam Ghaly, and Aaron Lennon.
All of Spurs Christmas and New Year fixtures are quite tough, and they may have to settle for a point in this first of four games over 10 days. I would be well pleased with 8 points from those matches, and I'll predict a 1-1 draw for Saturday.
May I take this further opportunity to sincerely wish ALL readers a very Happy Christmas and all that you wish for, for yourselves and your loved ons in 2007!
