What a year 2006 has been for Portsmouth! After Match 21 of last year's Premiership (played on January 2nd), they were still in the bottom three, two points adrift of West Brom. Pompey fans remained unconvinced at that time about the wisdom of re-appointing Harry Redknapp, but with 6 wins in their last 10 games of the season, Portsmouth climbed to safety.
Redknapp set to work in changing the personnel in last January's window, and carried on the changing of the guard in the summer. Now the fans must be hailing him as a Messiah, as they sit high in the Premiership table with enough points to forget about the relegation battle and seriously challenge for Europe.
It hurts for a Spurs fan to say it of course, but the ex-Arsenal connection is working well for Redknapp, with Campbell reneging on his wish expressed to the gooners to play abroad, and turning up on the South Coast. His former colleague, Kanu, who scored only 5 league goals last season for West Brom (two against Spurs on 28th December 2005), is Portsmouth's top scorer with 9 league goals to his name already. Kanu did not feature in Portsmouth's first league defeat in 7 games yesterday at Bolton, but maybe he'll be present to torment Spurs tomorrow.
There is of course also a strong ex-Spurs connection on the South Coast, with Pamarot, Mendes and Davis all playing recent games. Pamarot has featured in 15 Premiership games and even scored a couple of recent goals. Mendes and Davis are amongst the first names on Redknapp's team sheet. Look out too for Matthew Taylor, whose spectacular goals have caught the eye this month. Those against Everton and Arsenal will both be in contention for the goal of the month competition.
Spurs then face as tough a task as ever in this match, played in a cauldron of vocal home support. Perhaps there is a chink in the armoury at last, with David James making a couple of errors at The Reebock Stadium yesterday.
We must hope that Dimitar Berbatov is fit enough to renew his flourishing partnership with Jermain Defoe. The first evidence of this came in the home game against Pompey, after just 42 seconds, when Defoe's cross was headed down and fumbled by James, leaving Danny Murphy to sweep up for his first Spurs goal from short range.
Murphy was quite effective against his old team yesterday, and may get a start for this match. Murphy replaced Zokora, who made the mistake that cost Spurs the game. If Zokora is picked, he will get a rough reception from the Pompey fans, now that they have seen the TV evidence of his dive that won Spurs the winning penalty in the home game.
Both teams must be getting tired after a strenuous Christmas programme, and another exciting open game is surely in prospect. If Spurs can play with the vigour showed in the last 20 minutes against Liverpool, I'll take them to sneak an away win, but otherwise they'll come away with nothing.
I hope to keep dry at the pre-war (open) end of the Pompey ground, and would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!
