Since 11th March this year Portsmouth have lost just three Premiership games, and actually have a marginally better league record than Chelsea over the same period. They lost their first league game of this season last Monday night when Bolton snatched a goal out of the blue and furiously defended and held onto that slender lead. Nolan's goal was the first conceded by Harry Redknapp's men in 6 Premiership games. Mansfield had been the first to burst that defensive bubble in the Carling Cup.
Part of Pompey's defensive success has of course been down to the presence of he-who-must-not-be-named, who got released by the gooners in the summer when he said he wanted to play abroad, then signed for free for Portsmouth. That's two London clubs Campbell sold down the river then. Spurs fans claim some responsibility for Campbell's psychological problems last year, when he absented himself from Arsenal's second half against West Ham. Campbell had been thoroughly psyched out of the Derby game at Tottenham, and can look forward to a welcome that will be just as vicious on Sunday - should he play. Never forget Sol, we hate you so much because we loved you so much. You said you loved us too, but deserted us in the worst way possible.
By contrast, another ex-gooner Kanu might go un-noticed, but there are other players in the Pompey squad that will get different receptions this week. Sean Davis bad-mouthed Martin Jol after his departure, but Pedro Mendes will get a rousing welcome. Noe Pamarot will get a cheer too, if selected.
When this game was played last season, in December, Redknapp had not long arrived back at Fratton Park, and the side which faced us is largely un-recognisable from the current squad. Redknapp has plenty of choice up front for a start, with Kanu and Mwaruwari starting most games. Lua-Lua has come back from somersault-induced injury and come off the bench to score an important goal too, whilst Andrew (mustn't call him Andy any more) Cole also lurks in the wings. Mwaruwari missed a few chances on Monday night, so we may see Lua-Lua start this one. Don't forget "England's Number 4" in goal, but to be honest, anyone with David James in their Fantasy Team has been getting good value from the veteran keeper so far.
Spurs won at home and away against Pompey last season, and after the home win, were assured of being above Arsenal for Christmas. Sadly we got knocked (or did we fall?) off our perch on the last day of the season.
Martin Jol says that Ledley King, Edgar Davids, Jermain Defoe and Paul Stalteri will probably be available for this one, and that Berbatov faces a late fitness test. I fancy that Defoe has been saved for this one, and will have some extra incentive after winning an apology from the management at Portsmouth, over their misleading claim that Defoe wanted a kove there in the summer.
Spurs will value the presence of Ledley King too, and we live in hope that his training injury really isn't as bad as had been rumoured. We have missed Berbatov badly, and it would be a bonus if he could play.
To be honest, Spurs will need as much as possible in their armoury for this game. They need to play like tigers, and battle and claw their way through the midfield, then create real chances for the front men.
It should be an end to end game, and as much as I want to see Spurs kick-start their league campaign, I fancy that we are going to get beaten 3-1 this Sunday, and that we have a long hard road ahead of us. (Yes, it's reverse psychology really as I can't predict anything right this season!)
