Spurs have only ever played Reading in the league in Division Two in the three seasons between 1928 and 1930.
The first of those 6 league meetings took place on Christmas Day and Boxing Day 1928! We drew the home match 2-2 and lost away 4-3! Spurs did not beat Reading till the third season, when we achieved a double, and won 7-1 at home.
Spurs met Reading in the FA Cup quarter-final on the way to FA Cup history in 1901, but our last competitive fixture against "The Royals" was on December 27th 1930.
We did play in the Madejski Stadium in July 2005 in a pre-season friendly. The big story of that day was the appearance of Edgar Davids in the Directors' Box alongside Spurs' officials. A few days later, Edgar's signing was confirmed, and once again, Spurs had a World class player on their books. Now, whilst Edgar's career is on the wane, I would venture to suggest that we have several more World Class players in the offing. The likes of Berbatov, Robinson, King, and Dawson spring to mind, with young Aaron Lennon coming on strong!
All of the above-mentioned Spurs players will be available, and despite a number of injuries, Davids is likely to be on the bench at best. That is another indication of how Spurs have matured, and how they are still growing in strength and confidence, week by week. Last week's marvellous result against Chelsea will surely be looked at as a landmark game for the Spurs of the future.
Malbranque and Ghaly are described as doubtful, but both are likely to travel. However, Chimbonda, Tainio, Davenport, Gardner and Mido definitely will not be involved. I would suggest that the starting line-up will be similar to the Chelsea game, with Young-Pyo Lee coming in for Chimbonda.
Reading will be missing Bobby Convey, who would have loved to put one over the team he nearly joined three years ago. Mind you, there can be no rancour over that, as it was a failure to obtain a work permit that prevented the move. Otherwise, reading's line-up will not differ radically from that which faced Spurs in the pre-season friendly in 2005
Spurs are unbeaten in their last 10 games, 8 of which have been victories. Reading started the season well, with 4 wins in their opening 7 games, but now have lost 4 on the trot. The "Royals" have also not won at home for two months, and will be desperate for success, as they have now dropped into the bottom half. Current form suggests they may yet fall as far as the relegation zone.
Spurs are still seeking their first away Premiership win, and indeed their first away goal scored by one of their own players. I'll go for a form result - 2-0 to Spurs.
Please note that due to a social commitment, my report will not be published until Monday 13th November
Did you know that when Reading's Jack Lewis converted a penalty during his club's 5-0 win over Bournemouth in May 1952, he set a new Football League record of 15 goals for a non-forward in a season. The previous record was held by Arthur Grimsdell who had scored 14 for Tottenham Hotspur in 1920.
