By now, most people are aware of the facts that Sevilla are battling with Barcelona at the top of La Liga; that they trounced Middlesbrough 4-0 in last year's UEFA Cup Final; that they beat Barcelona 3-0 to win the European Super Cup in 2006; and that ex-Spur Fredi Kanoute is scoring for fun this season, with 22 goals to his name, 19 of which have been in the League, to make him the current top scorer in La Liga.
Fredi Kanoute deserves a good reception from the Spurs fans, and I am sure he'll get it. Kanoute did not ask to leave, but the club apparently had an offer they considered too good to refuse, although there were rumours (never substantiated) that Kanoute had upset the club over his lack of commitment to a brief end of season tour to Mauritius two years ago.
Fredi's goal-scoring ratio for Spurs was never as high as it has been in Spain, but he did have many assists, and was capable of the spectacular, as demonstrated against Everton and Manchester City. Kanoute was one of several key players rested in Sevilla's 0-0 draw against potential UEFA Cup semi-final opposition Osasuna, with Brazilian Alves, and number one goalkeeper Andres Palop amongst others given a rest that indicated manager Juande Ramos was paying full respect to the threat of Spurs.
Spurs though have to admit that this draw has been as unkind to them as those in the domestic cups that led to our exit at the hands of London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea. The spirit in the Spurs camp could not be higher though, and despite the ongoing absence of Ledley King, and the late addition to the injured list of Tom Huddlestone, the Spurs party will travel to Spain full of confidence that they can do a job in the first leg to make their path to the semi-finals negotiable.
To counter the injuries, Spurs do have Teemu Tainio and Mido back in training, with Ghaly ready to return to action. Ricardo Rocha will once again be ineligible, which must mean a central defensive role for Pascal Chimbonda, and a right back berth for Paul Stalteri. Otherwise, the team may be little different from that which started against Reading, although Martin Jol has the additional worry of finding enough fit players to compete at Stamford Bridge on Saturday lunch-time.
Seville have plenty of star players, and it will be Spurs' toughest test of the European campaign to date. To maintain that 100% record would be a dream, but I fancy us to come away with a draw, and will plump for a 1-1. 4,000 Spurs fans will be amongst the 45,000 crowd to see the game, which we hope will follow a day of good-natured paella and San Miguel filled fun in and around the City that is celebrating Holy Week with parades and events for over 1,000,000 residents and visitors.
