Look out Spurs! Slavia Prague have hit form ahead of this Thursday's second leg of our UEFA Cup tie! In their first game since losing at home to a Jermaine Jenas goal, Slavia could only manage a goalless draw at home to 1.FC Slovacko, but then on Sunday, they turned it on and beat Viktoria Plzen 4-0 (away) thanks to a hat-trick from Pavel Fort, and a goal from skipper Lukas Jarolim. Fort was only a sub against us, but surely has done enough to win a place in what will be a do or die game for the visitors.
Slavia have a Derby game against Sparta to look forward to this week-end, so they will want to maintain their form, and I am sure Spurs will need to be on top of their game. Slavia have gone up to fifth in their league, just two points behind their local rivals.
Slavia Prague (or Praha to use the native Czech language) qualified for the UEFA Cup by virtue of their third place last season, finishing two places above Sparta. Slavia's results this season to date are as follows:-
Banik Ostrava 0-2 Slavia Praha
Slavia Praha 3-2 FK Teplice
Karvan 0-2 Slavia Praha
(UEFA Cup 2nd Qualifying Rd 1st Leg)
Slavia Praha 0-2 Slovan Liberec
1.FC Brno 1-0 Slavia Praha
Slavia Praha 0-0 Liberec
(UEFA Cup 2nd Qualifying Rd 2nd Leg)
Slavia Praha 3-0 Sigma Olomouc
Siad Most 2-0 Slavia Praha
Slavia Praha 0-1 Spurs
(UEFA Cup 1st Rd, 1st Leg)
Slavia Praha 0-0 1.FC Slovacko
Viktoria Plzen 0-4 Slavia Praha
No less than 3 players in the Slavia Prague first team squad will be celebrating birthdays on the day we play them in the return leg on Sept 28th. Ante Aracic turns 25, Martin Latka turns 22 and Gaucho turns 27. Only Latka and Gaucho took part in the first leg.
The winners of this tie will go into the Round 2 League of five teams, with two home and away matches to contend for further progress.
The Spurs team news sounds pretty grim, with Defoe, Davids, Stalteri, Gardner, Berbatov, Lennon and Malbranque ruled out AND skipper Ledley King facing "a late fitness test". The truth is though that only Jermain Defoe and Ledley started last Saturday, so the team will not change too much, except that Mido will return and play beside Robbie Keane. Tom Huddlestone will probably play a part in this game, as he did in Prague, but I fancy the starting midfield will be the same as at Liverpool.
The Ledley King saga has well and truly done the rounds this week on the message boards, with stories of him being rushed to hospital with a broken leg, then a serious knee injury, and now a problem that may keep him out of this game. I very much doubt we shall see him tomorrow night, but we will need him on Sunday when Pompey come to town.
This game is going to be no walk-over, and with Spurs confidence at a low, Slavia might take us close on the night. I'll predict a 2-1 (3-1 aggregate) to Spurs, and a further check of passports for all concerned - not least us fans! Spurs should be reverting to tradition for European nights and wearing all-white. Let's hope it will be "all-white" on the night!
