Tomorrow, Spurs face a Birmingham team that hopes to become resurgent under the new managership of former Scotland leader - Alex McLeish. McLeish becomes the fourth protege of Sir Alex Ferguson to manage a Premier League side. The others being Mark Hughes, Roy Keane, and McLeish's predecessor, Steve Bruce, who has taken over at our last home league victims, Wigan.
As you can see above, Spurs have a good record against the Brummies, who took the best part of 20 years to win their way back to top flight football, and had to do it all again last year after a four-year spell in the Premier League. Spurs have won all four of their home games aginst this team.
Co-incidentally, the last corresponding fixture was refereed by Phil Dowd who takes charge this week. Birmingham were not too happy with his award of a penalty, scored by Robbie Keane, which gave Spurs the lead. Keane also embarrassed rookie keeper Andy Marriott back in April 2003, with that cheeky goal by creeping up from behind the goalmouth. It's a trick that Keane tries now and again, but has never achieved the same result since.
Birmingham's promotion was achieved with a great deal of help from Arsenal connections. Steve Bruce signed midfielder Muamba and striker Bendtner on loan, and also signed on full terms Sebastian Larsson, who has made 9 league starts this term. Bendtner has returned to The Emirates, where he is getting chances, but Muamba has now also signed full-time, Muamba used to strike me as a Vieira type player, when he used to appear in the Arsenal Youth and Reserve sides. Now Birmingham have signed yet another gooner loanee - Johan Djourou, who played in the Premiership game against us last December.
So, there are plenty of gooner connections to boo, but let's remember to give a cheer to our former defender, Stephen Kelly, who scored for us at St. Andrews in a 1-1 draw in April 2005.
Birmingham have former Chelsea striker Mikael Forssell back in action after several absences through injury, and his partner will probably be former Cardiff striker Cameron Jerome. French International and former Juventus player Olivier Kapo is likely to appear in the midfield.
Birmingham are another side who invested quite strongly in the summer, and have some players with potential. They've beaten Derby, Bolton and Wigan so far, but their last away result of note was a draw at Anfield in September. The big question is whether McLeish has had sufficient time to drill his charges effectively.
Spurs must hope that is not the case, and with Jenas doubtful, that gives Tom Huddlestone a chance to reprise his second half display against AaB, with Zokora protecting a defence that may again include Younes Kaboul. Jermain Defoe will also be available and of course keen to get any chance to stake his claim to a place up front.
Juande Ramos has to have half an eye on next Thursday's game in Brussels, but I do fancy Spurs to win this one quite convincingly.
