Spurs travel to Ewood Park this Saturday, hopefully not with their tails between their legs, but with the forceful words of Juande Ramos ringing in their ears to try and ensure a decent team effort and performance against a side who still aspire to qualify for next season's UEFA cup.
Fifth place in the league is surely beyond Mark Hughes' side, as they are seven points adrift of Everton, but no Hughes' side will be allowed to give up on such a quest. Blackburn's UEFA Cup campaign this season was a great disappointment, as they lost in the first round to Greek side Larissa, who went on to lose all four of their Round Two games against opponents including Everton and Zenit St. Petersburg, who won so convincingly at Leverkusen last night.
Blackburn are a team with a great history, much admired by the first Spurs players in the 1880s, when Rovers won three consecutive FA Cups. The Spurs 125th year souvenir kit was based upon an early Spurs strip, which itself was a tribute to this Blackburn side.
In more recent times, Rovers have spent many years in the football wilderness. They won the League in 1912 and 1914, and the FA Cup in 1928, but then waited till 1960 before the chance of further Cup glory, when they lost 3-0 to Wolves in the Final. In Spurs Double season, we beat Rovers 4-1 away and 5-2 at home, with Bobby Smith scoring two goals at home and away. The advent of the late Jack Walker of course brought more success to a Shearer-inspired Rovers' side, managed by Kenny Dalglish, but even since the creation of the Premier League they have spent two seasons outside the elite section.
That's all history of course, and under Hughes, Blackburn have become a resilient side, capable of beating any team in the league on their day. Currently their Paraguayan striker Roque Santa Cruz is leading their attack with 14 league goals in 30 games, which include a hat-trick in the away game at Wigan, and a further two goals against the same side in their recent 3-1 win. Benni McCarthy and David Bentley have also been chipping in to good effect. Centre-back Christopher amba scored a last minute winner for Blackburn in this season's game at White Hart Lane. This was just one example of too many games where Spurs lost a lead and also lost due to a late goal. Spurs have made their come-backs of course, but Ramos surely needs to toughen up this Spurs squad so they are no longer a soft touch to teams such as Newcastle who embarrassed us last week.
Robbie Keane has good reason to enjoy playing against Blackburn. He scored the first of his 100(plus) goals for Spurs in October 2002. Keane picked up the ball in the deep and went on a great run, firing the ball into the roof of Friedel's net. Spurs won this game 2-1. Robbie also rates his first goal in the March 2006 home game against Rovers as one of his best. This was a 3-2 win for Spurs, and featured two by Robbie. That first goal included great skill in chipping the ball over Robbie Savage near the bye line before cuting in and firing past Friedel again.
Brad Friedel has been a great servant of Blackburn Rovers, signing from Liverpool in 2000. The American has now played 282 League games, and like Paul Robinson can claim a league goal. Friedel scored a late goal at Charlton (Rovers still lost 3-2) late in a season when Rovers were at the wrong end of the table (like Spurs).
We are told that Jenas has recovered from illness and is training along with Kaboul, who has recovered from injury. Whether one or the other features in this game remains to be seen, but I fancy that a fit and determined Jenas could inspire Spurs to a result that would put last week's debacle out of our minds. Last season's game was a 1-1 draw which included a set-to when Ghaly was sent off. Tugay had already been sent off for a foul on the Egyptian, who of course made his last appearance for Spurs in last season's home game when he threw the shirt to the floor after being a substituted substitute.
I think that a draw is the best we may hope for from Spurs in this game, but hope their desire matches that of Rovers. I'll predict 1-1.
