Once again Spurs are dominating the football press for all the wrong reasons, as we fans have to suffer yet another potential "transitional period". Juande Ramos has tonight signed on the dotted line, and it looks very much like Gus Poyet will be joining us in the next day or two. Ramos will be watching today's game, and will take over in time for Wednesday night's Carling Cup tie. One thing I do look forward to in time is a more sophisticated and biting midfield, and I am sure Ramos will adress this and other areas very quickly, although of course he is limited regarding any changes of personnel before the January window.
Today then Clive Allen and Alex Inglethorpe will look after team affairs, and it will be interesting to see if they bring a change of style for this one game. Blackburn have proved a formidable side in the Premier League this season, so risk-taking may not be advisable by the temporary coaches.
However, both Allen and Inglethorpe like to play with two wingers, one main striker and a fast man supporting the striker in front of the robust members of the midfield. Spurs haven't got any robust midfielders except perhaps for Boateng, who has been out of the first team reckoning so far, and who was an unused substitute against Getafe. It would be exciting to see both Lennon and Taarabt get a start, and perhaps Jermain Defoe could be the pace man behind Berbatov. No doubt Robbie Keane will be in the starting line-up though, and who can argue against that with his recent scoring record?
The Spurs defence almost picks itself for this game with Anthony Gardner joining the injury list after Thursday night, so it has to be Chimbonda, Dawson, Kaboul and Lee, with other contenders still injured. Jenas is also doubtful.
Blackburn have few injury problems, and are undefeated on their League travels of four games, including a creditable draw at Stamford Bridge. They will justifiably feel confident. Last week, Tugay scored a sensational long distance goal at Ewood Park against Reading, and he did the same against us at Ewood Park last season. There are plenty of names in the Rovers' squad to give us worries, such as Benni McCarthy, David Bentley, and Santa Cruz.
It will take an excellent performance by the Spurs team to get a result, but they have achieved success against the same team in adversity. In February 1998, when in the bottom three, at Ewood Park, Spurs won 3-0 with goals by Berti, Fox and Armstrong. Spurs got up to 17th then, but it took till the end of the season to escape the drop.
Once again, a point would get us out of the bottom three, but a win is required to lift us to 14th place. Sadly, I fear the visitors will take this one 2-1.
