Spurs’ opponents in the Fourth Round of the Carling (League) Cup are Blackpool, who are a division below them, playing in the Championship. Blackpool wear tangerine shirts and white shorts, the only team in the four English divisions to do so.

Blackpool’s halcyon day’s were between 1937-38 and 1966-67 when the enjoyed an unbroken spell in the old First Division. During that time they won the FA Cup once and were losing finalists twice. They were also runners up in the league once. Among the great players who played for Blackpool at some time during the 1950s or 1960s were Stanley Matthews, Stanley Mortensen, Harry Johnston, Jimmy Armfield, Alan Ball and Emlyn Hughes. With the exception of Hughes all of the others won England caps while playing for Blackpool.

There have been a number of notable games between Spurs and Blackpool.

Saturday 13 March 1948 FA Cup Semi Final at Villa Park

Tottenham Hotspur 1 Blackpool 3

The legendary Sir Stanley Matthews in action against Spurs' Ron Burgess in the 1948 FA Cup semi-final at Villa Park

To put things in perspective, at the time of the game Blackpool were 7th in Division 1 and Spurs were 6th in Division 2! So Spurs were actually the underdogs.

Spurs took the lead midway through the second half and lead 1-0 with four minutes remaining. However then Stan Mortensen equalized from a very narrow angle. He completed a hat trick in extra time. Blackpool lost 4-2 to Manchester United in the final.

Saturday 19 August 1950 Division 1, White Hart Lane

Tottenham Hotspur 1 Blackpool 4

This was Spurs first league game back in the top division after a fifteen year absence (which of course included the war years). Spurs began badly going 2-0 down and finally losing 4-1 with Stanley Matthews being prominent for Blackpool. Spurs did have the last laugh as they won the league championship at the end of the season.

Saturday 21 March 1953 FA Cup Semi Final at Villa Park

Tottenham Hotspur 1 Blackpool 2

For the second time in five years Spurs and Blackpool met in a cup semi final at Villa Park. The score was 1-1 in the closing minutes of the game. Alf Ramsey, normally the most reliable of full backs, attempted a back pass to Ted Ditchburn which Jackie Mudie intercepted and scored the winning goal for Blackpool.

Blackpool went on to win the Cup beating Bolton 4-3 in the final. This was the famous ‘Matthews final’. Blackpool were 3-1 down with twenty minutes to go and inspired by Stanley Matthews, they came back to win with Stan Mortensen scoring a hat trick. Bill Perry, who actually scored the winning goal sadly passed away in September this year. The semi-final was the last hurrah for the Spurs ‘push and run’ team which had won the league two seasons before and it began to break up at the end of the 1952-53 season.

Saturday 30 April 1960 Division 1, White Hart Lane

Tottenham Hotspur 4 Blackpool 1

This was Stanley Matthews last appearance at White Hart Lane. He was 45 years old at the time and was therefore I believe the oldest player ever to appear in a competitive game at White Hart Lane.

Saturday 16 December 1962 Division 1, White Hart Lane

Tottenham Hotspur 5 Blackpool 2

Jimmy Greaves made his debut in this game. He had scored on his debut for Chelsea (coincidently against Spurs), for the England Under 23s and the England full team. So the question was would he score on his debut for Spurs? Not only did he score but he completed a hat trick to make quite an impression in his first game for Spurs.

Saturday 5 January 1991 FA Cup Third Round, Bloomfield Road

Blackpool 0 Tottenham Hotspur 1

The last meeting between Blackpool and Spurs took place in 1991. It was a cold windy day. Blackpool had two goals disallowed. The only goal came midway through the second half. A Gascoigne free kick was deflected off Lineker to Stewart whose shot took a deflection before entering the net. Ironically Paul Stewart was a former Blackpool player. Spurs went on to win the Cup that year.

The only other player in fairly recent times to play for both clubs apart from Paul Stewart was Alfie Conn.

Blackpool were relegated from Division 2 at the end of the 1977-78 season, coincidently the same season that Spurs spent in Division 2 when they won promotion. Blackpool spent the next twenty nine seasons in the two lower divisions.

In November 2005 former Aston Villa and Leicester player Simon Grayson was appointed manager. Blackpool did not make a very good start to the 2006-07 season. After eleven games their record was W1 D5 L5 and they were 21st in the table. After that they really hit form and over the next 35 league games they won 23, drew 6 and only lost six. This propelled them to third place in Division 1. They subsequently won promotion to the Championship via the play-offs.

Their performance in the Championship this season has been fairly modest. They lie in 20th position after thirteen games having won two games, drawn seven and lost four. Their most recent game was a 2-1 defeat away to Sheffield Wednesday.

This Carling Cup tie will be Juande Ramos’s first game in charge and as such has particular significance. I expect Spurs to progress to the fifth round of the Carling Cup and will predict a 3-1 scoreline.

Editor's notes

Blackpool have reached this stage after beating Huddersfield 1-0 in Round One, Derby away 2-2 (penalties) in Round Two, then Southend 2-1 in Round 3. That win over Southend on 25th September, was their last win in 10 games. Their top scorers are striker Andy Morrell (formerly of Coventry) with 4, and midfielder Wes Hoolihan with 3.

Whilst not under-estimating the opposition, this game will be a chance for Juande Ramos to try out his systems before the Premier League showdown at The Riverside on Saturday. I fancy he will field quite a strong side, and I understand that Paul Robinson and Jermaine Jenas are in the reckoning to play this one.

So, we will see The Tangerines on Pumpkin Day, but I do not forsee a Spurs Halloween Horror Show this time!
