I mentioned in the preview for the first part of this FA Cup tie that when Spurs met Reading on their way to their 1901 Cup success, the quarter-fnal was in fact Round Three. It wasn't until the replay that Spurs won, so there is still time for history to repeat itself! This time though Spurs have to travel, and our only official visit to the Madesjki Stadium last season was not auspicious, as were well beaten 3-1.
Since the 2-2 draw, Spurs have had to battle in two full-blooded London Derby matches against Arsenal and Chelsea, whilst Reading had a full week off, and just had the game at Villa Park on Saturday, which they lost 3-1. Remember also that Steve Coppell will again rest most of his first team in favour of the men who put up a late fight to get a draw against 10-man Spurs. Tom Huddlestone's three match suspension will be completed with this game, in which Jenas will be a welcome returnee after a one match ban. The suspensions are beginning to mount up for Spurs now, as well as injuries and international absence (Zokora). Steed Malbranque got his fifth booking at Chelsea and will be available for this match, before having to sit out the home game against Sunderland.
Spurs had a mixed bag of results in Third Round replays in recent years. Last year we thrashed Cardiff 4-0 after that horrible trip to Ninian Park. It is 8 years now since we were knocked out of the FA cup before Christmas, when New catsle took us back to St. James' Park and gave us a beating we'd rather forget. In January, 1996, lowly Hereford won the right to play in a replay at White Hart Lane, but they were overwhelmed 5-1, thanks to a Teddy Sheringham hat-trick and two goals from Chris Armstrong. In 1994, we were tested by Peterborough, with both matches ending 1-1, and Spurs getting through at The Lane 5-4 on penalties. Finally, in January 1992, after a 0-0 at Villa Park, Spurs were knocked out by a single goal by a player who could be facing us next Saturday - Dwight Yorke! Yorke is 36 now, but was just 21 then, with another 6 seasons at Villa still to follow.
I understand that Michael Duberry will not be available for this replay, but as yet there has been little team news.
It is Spurs fifth game of the year, and they have yet to win in 2008. The winner of course has the pleasure of a trip to Old Trafford on Sunday 27th January. It will also be Spurs' 34th game of this season, and whilst the breathing space of a defeat might be handy, Spurs will try to make progress and win this game, and I've a feeling they will do it by one goal, or perhaps even after penalties!
