Hapoel Tel-Aviv were founded in 1923, but had a stop-go start until they were well and truly established in 1926. Their nickname is "The Red Demons" and their home colours are all red. They play in the Bloomfield Stadium, which has a capacity of 16,500. The manager of Hapoel Tel-Aviv is Guy Luzon, who is just 29, and has been managing in Israel since the 2001-2 season.
Hapoel notably beat Chelsea in the 2001/2 UEFA Cup, but the following year were well beaten by a Leeds team, which included our own Paul Robinson.
Hapoel Tel-Aviv currently lie bottom of their 12-team league with just three points from 12 games. They have yet to win a league game this season, and have a goal difference of minus 7. Hapoel finished third in their league last season, but qualified for the UEFA Cup by winning a domestic cup competition. Last season, they reached the "Round of 32" in this competition, losing to Rangers. Hapoel had beaten the Glasgow team 2-1 at home, but lost 4-0 at Ibrox.
Hapoel Tel-Aviv's record in this year's UEFA Cup is as follows:-
Siroki Brijeg 0-3 Hapoel Tel-Aviv
Hapoel Tel-Aviv 3-0 Siroki Brijeg
(2nd Qualifying Round)
Hapoel Tel-Aviv 0-0 AIK
AIK 0-1 Hapoel Tel-Aviv
(1st Round)
Anderlecht 2-0 Hapoel Tel-Aviv
(Round Two Game 1)
Our opponents have just had a run of five consecutive defeats, in which they managed to score just once in the most recent game.
Spurs have never played a team in Israel before. Plenty of Spurs fans are making the trip to The Holy Land for more than one reason.
Spurs should be hot favourites for this game, and indeed need to win to set upon the path to qualification in this group. I have received no definite team news as yet, but suspect the list of absentees will be unchanged from last Saturday. I'll take us to win this one comfortably, despite our own poor recent form.
